Location
The Electronic Stability Program control unit is located on the traction system hydraulic unit in the left of the engine compartment.
Tasks
The Electronic Stability Program control unit contains the control for the following systems:
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)
- Electronic brake force distribution (EBD)
- Emission test, roller dynamometer mode
- Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
- Straight Line Control (as of 01.09.2015)
- Acceleration skid control (ASR), electronic traction system
- Brake Assist System (BAS)
- Damper characteristics (with code A20 (Adjustable damping))
- Hill Start Assist
- Precharging, depending on accelerator pedal actuation
- HOLD function
- ESP® trailer stabilization (except model 463.242)
- Flashing adaptive brake lights
- Dry braking (as of 01.09.2015)
- Failboost and overboost
- Standstill control (SSC)
- Limiter (except code EZ9 (DISTRONIC PLUS) and except code ZU8 (National version for USA))
- CRUISE CONTROL (except code EZ9 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
The Electronic Stability Program control unit has the following tasks:

Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- Direct line
- Chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1)
- Vehicle dynamics CAN (CAN H)
Direct line
The signals from the following components are read via direct lines:
- Front-axle brake pressure sensor (A7/3b1) (except code EZ9 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
- Front pressure sensor (A7/3b7) (with code EZ9 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
- Rear pressure sensor (A7/3b8) (with code EZ9 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
- Brake vacuum sensor (B64/1)
- Brake lights switch (S9/1)
- Left front axle rpm sensor (L6/1)
- Right front axle rpm sensor (L6/2)
- Left rear axle rpm sensor (L6/3)
- Right rear axle rpm sensor (L6/4)
Chassis CAN 1
The Electronic Stability Program control unit also reads in the following signals over chassis CAN 1:
- Driver seat belt buckle status
- Steering wheel angle
- Drive position status
- Accelerator pedal position
- Dynamometer mode status
- Status of engine management
- Vehicle level (as of 01.09.2015)

Vehicle dynamics CAN
The Electronic Stability Program control unit also reads in the following signals over the vehicle dynamics CAN:
- Yaw velocity
- Transverse and longitudinal acceleration
- Vehicle inclination

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.
Actuation of components
The following components are actuated via direct lines:
- High pressure/return flow pump (A7/3m1)
- Left front pressure regulating valve, hold pressure (A7/3y6)
- Left front pressure regulating valve, relieve pressure (A7/3y7)
- Right front pressure regulating valve, hold pressure (A7/3y8)
- Right front pressure regulating valve, relieve pressure (A7/3y9)
- Left rear pressure regulating valve, hold pressure (A7/3y10)
- Left rear pressure regulating valve, relieve pressure (A7/3y11)
- Right rear pressure regulating valve, hold pressure (A7/3y12)
- Right rear pressure regulating valve, relieve pressure (A7/3y13)
- Front-axle switchover valve (A7/3y18)
- Rear-axle switchover valve (A7/3y19)
- Front-axle intake ball valve (A7/3y22)
- Rear-axle intake ball valve (A7/3y23)
- SAM control unit (N10) (Standstill control and brake light actuation)
Sending signals
The Electronic Stability Program control unit also sends the following signals over chassis CAN 1:
- Status of brake pedal
- ESP® status
- Request to reduce engine torque
- Downshift suppression request
- Drive position request
