General
The toll system records survey data on toll roads and transmits them to the toll recording system e.g. by radio data.
Currently, the ETC (Electronic Toll Collect) toll system is supported in Japan, Hi-Pass in Korea, and toll systems in China and (depending on model) in the USA.
Function requirements
- Circuit 15R on
- The toll system is switched on.
The toll system can be switched on and off in Japan, Korea and the USA using the multimedia system control. In the USA, it is also possible to switch on using a button on the toll system control unit. In China, a Bluetooth® connection to the user's smartphone is required to activate the toll system.
- Japan, Korea: The ETC/Hi-Pass card is located in the toll system control unit.
- China: The user carries a smartphone with activated access to the toll system with them. The toll system control unit has connected through Bluetooth® to the user's smartphone.
Function
Data exchange between the toll system control unit and the toll station takes place over the toll system antenna.
ETC/Hi-Pass
For data to be exchanged between the toll system control unit and the toll station, the toll system control unit requires an ETC/"Hi-Pass" card on which user data is stored. The toll system control unit also stores evidence that fees have already been paid on the ETC/"Hi-Pass" card.
The toll system control unit forwards messages in the toll system to the media display and to the speaker system (not in Korea) through the multimedia system control. In Korea, the speaker output is through the speakers integrated into the toll system control unit.
E.g., a message can be issued in the following cases:
- Payment completed successfully
- Fault in the communication with the tollbooth
- ETC/Hi-Pass card read error
- ETC/Hi-Pass card reader error
- ETC/Hi-Pass card not accepted
- ETC/Hi-Pass card not inserted
- No detailed information regarding the recent fee payments
The toll system control unit is located in the glove compartment. The DSRC antenna is located behind the windshield in the center on the instrument panel.
The toll system control unit is not installed ex factory, but is retrofitted in the corresponding countries before delivery. The antenna and the wiring harness are installed ex factory.
China toll system
The Bluetooth® button on the toll system control unit is used to establish a Bluetooth® connection to the user's smartphone. Display and operation is carried out via the user's smartphone.
USA toll system
In the USA, the toll system also enables the use of toll tunnels, bridges, ferries and multi-story car parks, where applicable. The toll payment amount depends on the number of vehicle occupants. The more people in the vehicle, the higher the discount for the toll fee.
The toll system can be operated in the "Automatic" or "Manual" modes. In "Automatic" mode, the number of vehicle occupants is recognized by the vehicle through the seat occupied recognition and the status of the seat belt buckles, and reported to the toll recording system. In "Manual" mode, the user enters the number of vehicle occupants himself. The entry is made using a menu on the multimedia system control or buttons on the toll system control unit.
Status indication
Japan, Korea: On the toll system control unit, there is an LED on the left that lights up green when the toll system control unit is OK. On the right, there is an LED that flashes red if a malfunction is detected. USA: On the toll system control unit, there is an LED in the center that flashes red if a malfunction is detected.
