4MATIC transfer case, general
The transfer case is integrated in the rear section of the automatic transmission.
What makes it so special is its single-stage side output with integrated universal joint (6).
The single-stage version, in contrast to the dual-stage side output of previous transfer cases, no longer requires a spur gear set including the bearing. This acts positively on efficiency, weight and the noise characteristics of the drivetrain.
In case of repair, certain components (such as the transfer case) can be replaced separately.
It is not essential to replace the complete transfer case together with the automatic transmission.
