Location
The electrical power steering control unit is attached to the electric power steering actuator motor.
Task
The electrical power steering control unit has the following tasks:
- Reading in of sensors and signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Actuation of components
- Transmission of requests/information
Reading in of sensors and signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- Direct line
- Chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2)
Direct line
The following sensor is read in via a direct line:
- Electric power steering torque sensor
Chassis CAN 2
The following signals are read in over chassis CAN 2:
- Steer Assist torque request and wheel speeds, from the Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) except CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS) or from the Premium Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/7) with CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Status of circuit 61 and engine RPM, from ME-SFI control unit (N3/10)
- Steering angle and steering angle rate of change, recorded by the steering column tube module control unit (N80) through the steering angle sensor (N49)
- Current status and requested rotation angle of the parking system control unit (N62) with CODE 230 (Excluding parking assist) without CODE 498 (Japan version) or with CODE 220 (PARKTRONIC) with CODE 498 (Japan version)
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors which are read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor, the relevant components are then actuated and requests/information are output.

The following component is actuated directly:
- Electric power steering actuator motor
Transmission of requests/information
The following requests/information are transmitted via chassis CAN 2:
- Request for a warning message in instrument cluster (A1)
- Steering torque and steering speed to the Electronic Stability Program control unit (except CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS) or to the Premium Electronic Stability Program control unit (with CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS)
- Steering assistance status
