	Remove/install
	Risk of injury  caused by performing testing or repair work on airbag or emergency tensioning retractor units	Store airbag units with deployment side facing up; do not expose to temperatures greater than 100 °C. When working on these units, disconnect the power supply.	AS91.00-Z-0001-01A

1	Place steering column in the central height position
2	Disconnect ground line at the on-board electrical system battery		AR54.10-P-0003EW
3	Insert screwdriver bit into openings (arrows) on steering wheel (2) and unscrew bolts on driver sidebag unit (1)	The screws remain on the steering wheel (2).

4.1	Remove driver airbag unit (1) from steering wheel (2) until electrical connectors (7 or 8) are accessible	For steering wheel in 3-spoke design
4.2	Remove driver airbag unit (1) from steering wheel (2) until electrical connector (6) is accessible	For steering wheel in 4-spoke design
5	Disconnect electrical connectors (7)	On model 212 with 3-spoke design steering wheel
6	Disconnect electrical connector (6)	For steering wheel in 4-spoke design
7	Disconnect electrical connector (8)	For steering wheel in 3-spoke design
8	Remove driver airbag unit (1) from steering wheel (2) until electrical connectors (5) are accessible
9	Release lock tabs (4) and disconnect electrical connectors (5)	Never disconnect electrical connectors (3) with electrical connectors (5) connected, because otherwise the driver airbag unit (1) may be triggered.
		The electrical connectors (5) must audibly engage when being plugged onto driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13) and driver airbag squib 2 (R12/14).	Figure
10	Disconnect driver airbag unit (1) from steering wheel (2)	If driver airbag unit (1) is being replaced, the defective driver airbag unit (1) must be disposed of properly. See: ↓

11	Install in the reverse order
12	Check supplemental restraint system (SRS) with STAR DIAGNOSIS	After replacing the driver airbag unit (1).
	Connect STAR DIAGNOSIS and read out fault memory		AD00.00-P-2000-04A
