Instrument cluster, general
The instrument cluster informs the driver about all dynamic and static vehicle conditions as well as about the condition of the systems installed in the vehicle.
If faults occur at individual systems or in critical safety-relevant driving situations, corresponding warnings are displayed in the instrument cluster.
To make this information visible to the driver, the instrument cluster can actuate the following displays:
- Permanent displays (e.g. vehicle speed, engine speed, tank content)
- Control messages (green, yellow, red or blue) (e.g. turn signal light, high beam)
- Warning messages (red) (e.g. coolant level, brake fluid level)
Detailed information on the symbols for the warning and control messages is available in a separate document.
Operation of instrument cluster as of 01.06.2017:
Via the instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group (S163/1), different menu levels in the instrument cluster (A1) can be displayed:
- The "Home" and "Back" button (S163/1 s14) can be used to jump from the menu or submenu to the next higher menu level. Via a long press of the "Home" and "Back" button it is possible to jump to the main menu.
- Via the instrument cluster finger navigation pad (S163/1 s10) it is possible to navigate in menus (right/left) or lists (up/down). Pressing the instrument cluster finger navigation pad enables the respective selection or pending messages to be confirmed.
An acoustic feedback takes place during the operation of the control elements in the instrument cluster multifunction steering wheel button group. The steering wheel electronics sends the status of the control elements over the steering wheel CAN (CAN LR), steering column tube module control unit (N80), suspension FlexRay (Flex E), electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster directly actuates the instrument cluster speaker.
Operation of instrument cluster up to 31.05.2017:
By swiping on the instrument cluster finger navigation pad, it is possible to navigate within the operating menus (e. g. Workshop, Service, Journey, Media) in the instrument cluster and change to submenus.
- Swiping movement from left to right and vice versa enables browsing through the main menu.
- Wiping from top to bottom and vice versa in the submenus enables you to scroll through the submenus or lists.
- Pressing the "Back" button (S163/1s13) allows the user to go from the main menu or submenu to the next level.
- Pressing on the finger navigation pad of the instrument cluster enables confirming the current selection or pending messages.
Pressing the "Back" button for a prolonged period causes the display to return to the main menu.
The available main menus and submenus depend on the vehicle equipment.
Model 213 as of model year 2018 up to model year 2021
Acoustic feedback is issued when operating the instrument cluster finger navigation pad.
The instrument cluster makes the following functions possible:
- Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
- Function sequence for information display test
The following functions are described in separate documents:
- Control/warning messages, function
- Display operating conditions, function
- Comfort displays, function
- Trip computer, function
- Settings on workshop level, function
- Active Service System PLUS (ASSYST PLUS) function
- Head-up display function (with CODE 463 (Head-up display))
Function sequence for activate instrument cluster
The instrument cluster is activated by the user interface CAN being actuated, e.g. through:
- Unlocking the vehicle through radio frequency
- Driver door opened
- Activation of circuit 15R (radio position)
After bus idle, the instrument cluster remains active for t = 30 s. If there is a fault, this time is extended to t = 120 s.
Additional function requirements for indicator lamp test
- Terminal 15 ON
The electronic ignition lock control unit sends the circuit 15 status to the instrument cluster via user interface CAN.
Function sequence for indicator lamp test
The monitor lamp test is used to perform a function test on certain warning and indicator lamps in the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster performs this test automatically each time circuit 15 (ignition) is switched on.
The function of the following warning and indicator lamps is checked during the indicator lamp test:
- Trailer indicator (with code 550 (Trailer hitch))
- Anti-lock braking system indicator lamp (yellow)
- Battery indicator lamp
- Brake fluid and parking brake indicator lamp
- ESP® SPORT indicator lamp (model 213.064/088/089/164/264/288/289)
- Parking brake indicator lamp
- Engine diagnosis warning lamp (yellow)
- Regenerative brake system indicator lamp (for hybrid vehicles)
- Supplemental Restraint System indicator lamp (red)
- Suspension malfunction indicator lamp (yellow) (as of 01.06.2017 with code 459 (Steel suspension with adjustable damping) or code 489 (AIR BODY CONTROL))
- Preglow indicator lamp (diesel engine)
- Brake system warning lamp
- DISTRONIC warning lamp (with code 239 (Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC) or code 258 (COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST) or code 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS))
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) warning lamp
- ESP®/ASR warning lamp OFF (yellow)
- Parking brake warning lamp (yellow)
- Fuel reserve warning lamp (yellow)
- Coolant temperature warning lamp
- Power steering warning lamp
- Tire pressure monitor warning lamp (with code 475 (Tire pressure monitor))
- Seat belt warning lamp (red)
The indicator lamp test ends when the engine is started.
Operation of the following indicator lamps is not checked:
- Low beam indicator lamp
- Left turn signal indicator light
- Right turn signal indicator light
- High beam indicator lamp
- Rear fog lamp indicator lamp
- Standing lamps indicator lamp
