Display Operating Conditions, Function - GF54.30-P-3041FG

Model 213 up to model year 2021

Function requirements, general

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) transmits the status of circuit 15 via the user interface CAN (CAN HMI) to the instrument cluster (A1).

Display operating conditions, general

The operating condition display continuously provides the driver with information.

The "display operating conditions" function comprises the following subfunctions:

Display of speed function sequence

The Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) uses the wheel speeds to calculate the vehicle speed and sends the vehicle speed via the chassis FlexRay (Flex E), electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster then displays the vehicle speed.

Display of engine speed function sequence

The CDI control unit (N3/9) (diesel engine) or the ME-SFI control unit (N3/10) (gasoline engine) sends information about the engine speed via the engine CAN (CAN C), the powertrain control unit (N127), the chassis FlexRay, the electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives the engine rpm value and then displays it.

IMPORTANT Model 213

up to model year 2021

with code 464 (Instrument cluster 12.3" diagonal) The engine speed is not displayed permanently.

Display of coolant temperature function sequence

The CDI control unit or ME-SFI control unit sends information on the coolant temperature to the instrument cluster via engine CAN, drivetrain control unit, suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN. The instrument cluster receives the value for the coolant temperature and actuates the coolant temperature gauge accordingly.

The coolant temperature gauge is actuated via a correction characteristic. This correction characteristic defines the following four temperature ranges in which the coolant temperature is displayed in different ways:

T ≤ 75°C:

The coolant temperature display shows a value on a steadily ascending straight line between 0 and 87°C.

T > 75 to 115°C:

The coolant temperature display shows a value on a steadily ascending straight line between 87 and 95°C.

T > 115 to 120°C:

The coolant temperature display shows a value on a steadily ascending straight line between 95 and 120°C.

T > 120°C (start of red warning range):

The coolant temperature gauge shows the actual coolant temperature.

If a fault occurs, the actual coolant temperature is displayed.

At coolant temperatures above 124°C, the coolant temperature warning indicator is additionally displayed and a warning message is output.

If the instrument cluster does not receive a value for the coolant temperature, it permanently actuates the coolant temperature warning indicator. The coolant temperature display is not actuated.

IMPORTANT Model 213.016/050/053/054/216 up to model year 2021

The coolant temperature is not displayed permanently.

Display of travel distance function sequence

The instrument cluster calculates the traveled distance from the wheel speeds, taking the tire circumference into consideration. The Electronic Stability Program control unit sends the wheel speeds via the suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

IMPORTANT The tire size is coded using the diagnostic tester.

The trip distance and total distance are displayed in the instrument cluster. The maximum counter reading for trip distance is 9999.9; the display then returns to 0. The maximum counter reading for total distance is 1, 609, 344 (for kilometer reading) (1, 000, 000 (for mileage reading)); after this, the counter reading stops increasing.

The total distance is stored in the non-volatile memory of the instrument cluster. This memory guarantees the retention of the counter reading for at least five years even when the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is disconnected. The current reading of the trip distance is likewise stored in the nonvolatile memory of the instrument cluster.

Function sequence for display of fuel quantity/charge level (for hybrid vehicles)

Fuel quantity

The fuel system control unit (N118) sends information on the fill level of the fuel tank via the drive train CAN (CAN C1), powertrain control unit, chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives this information, evaluates it and indicates the fill level in the form of a bar graph.

When the reserve level is reached (approx. 12.5 % of the maximum tank volume), the instrument cluster actuates the reserve indicator lamp, hides the bar graph display, shows a gas station symbol (fuel pump (yellow)) and issues a message. The reserve range is defined by comparing a measured fill level against the stored tank characteristic. If the reserve level drops to approx. 50 %, a gas station symbol (fuel pump) is displayed in the Range menu instead of the distance reading.

IMPORTANT If the fill level of the fuel tank drops more quickly than technically feasible based on composite mileage, the left fuel tank fuel level indicator fill level sensor (B4/1) is deemed to be defective and a corresponding message is displayed in the instrument cluster.

Charge level (for hybrid vehicles)

IMPORTANT The battery management system control unit (N82/2) monitors the charge level of the high-voltage battery (A100g1).

The battery management system control unit sends the information on the charge level over the hybrid CAN (CAN L), powertrain control unit, suspension FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and the user interface CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster receives these messages, evaluates them and displays the charge level accordingly.

Function sequence for gear indicator and transmission mode display (transmission 725)

The engaged gear range and the active transmission mode are displayed in the right part of the instrument cluster (in the tachometer).

The fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8n4) sends corresponding information for the display via the drive train CAN, powertrain control unit, chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN to the instrument cluster.

Function sequence for "ECO" display

The ECO start/stop function is automatically activated after each ignition change. It can be deactivated and re-activated using the touchpad (A105) (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) or the Audio/COMMAND control panel (A40/9) (except code 446 (Touchpad only)).

The touchpad (with code 446 (Touchpad only)) or the Audio/COMMAND control panel (except code 446 (Touchpad only)) sends the actuated selection to the CDI control unit or to the ME-SFI [ME] control unit via the telematics CAN (CAN A), head unit (A26/17), user interface CAN, electronic ignition lock control unit, suspension FlexRay, powertrain control unit and engine CAN. The CDI control unit or ME-SFI control unit checks all the function requirements and sends the status of the ECO start/stop function to the instrument cluster via the engine CAN, powertrain control unit, chassis FlexRay, electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN. The operational readiness of the ECO start/stop function is indicated to the driver by the "ECO" symbol on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.

IMPORTANT Model 213 with transmission 716

up to model year 2021

If, while the vehicle is being driven, the ME-SFI control unit detects on the basis of the currently available parameters that an automatic engine stop is possible but neutral position has not been engaged, the gearshift recommendation "→ N" is shown in the instrument cluster.

Function sequence for displaying transport mode

In transport mode, only limited use of the vehicle is possible (e.g. limited maximum speed and limited exterior light functions). This is intended to protect the on-board electrical system battery. The transport mode is activated at the factory before loading of the vehicle, remains active during delivery and is deactivated again by the dealer before handover to the end customer. In active transport mode, the message "Transport mode" and the charge condition of the on-board electrical system battery are shown in the instrument cluster in the form of a bar graph with 40 stages.

IMPORTANT Detailed information on transport mode is available in a separate document.
