Charge Air Cooling, Basic Function - GF09.41-P-1000A
Engine all (CAR)
Overview
This document contains information on:
- General
- Function requirements
- Direct charge air cooling (air-to-air cooling)
- Indirect charge air cooling (air-to-water cooling)
General
The charge air cooler cools down the charge air heated up by compression. This improves the cylinder charge level and lower exhaust gas temperatures reduce the formation of nitrous gases (NGx). Charge air coolers are designed as heat exchangers.
Function requirements
- Engine management GN (circuit 87M)
- Engine runs
Direct charge air cooling (air-to-air cooling)
Shown: Charge air cooler (air-to-air cooling)
The charge air gives up its heat to the air stream passed through the charge air cooler, which is located directly downstream of the turbocharger. Fans support the charge air cooler in cooling the charge air.
Indirect charge air cooling (air-to-water cooling)
Shown: Charge air cooler (air-to-water cooling)
In indirect charge air cooling, the charge air is cooled by the coolant in the low-temperature circuit. The charge air cooler is indirectly cooled by the ambient air and the coolant contained in the low-temperature coolant circuit.
Charge air coolers that are cooled by coolant have a high output density. The installation location in the engine compartment can be freely selected due to their compact design.
