DANGER Risk of injury  to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing coolant. Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

  Drain off     
1 Open engine hood    
2 Unscrew cap on coolant expansion reservoir    
3 Remove front and center engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105LF
4 Slide drain hose (3) onto drain fitting (2)    
5 Loosen drain screw (4) and drain coolant IMPORTANT Collect coolant in a suitable container.  
6 Switch on ignition for about 5 seconds and then switch off again Model 217 with engine 157, 276, 278, 279 Model 222 with engine 157, 276.8, 277, 278, 279, 642, 651
IMPORTANT Repeat this procedure twice after a waiting time of about 30 s twice in order to empty the low-temperature water circuit.
 
  Drain coolant at coolant pump (1)     
7 Loosen coolant pump drain screw (5) Model 217 with engine 276.8
Model 222 with engine 276.8/9
IMPORTANT According to repair scope it is required that the coolant is also to drained off at the coolant pump.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 217, 222 with engine 276.8/9 Drain screw on coolant pump

8 Push drain hose (3) onto coolant pump drain screw (5) Model 217, 222 with engine 276.8

9 Open coolant pump drain screw (5) on coolant pump (1) and drain coolant Model 217, 222 with engine 276.8

IMPORTANT Collect coolant in a suitable container.
 
  Drain at crankcase     
10 Remove catalytic converter DPF unit Model 222 with engine 651 AR49.10-P-5501OLF
    IMPORTANT According to repair scope it is required that the coolant is also to drained off at the crankcase.  
11 Remove screw/bolts (11) and take off heat shield (12) Model 222 with engine 651  
12 Remove screw/bolts (13) and take off heat shield (14) Model 222 with engine 651  
13 Unfasten crankcase drain screw (10) Model 222 with engine 651  
14 Push drain hose (3) onto crankcase drain screw (10) Model 222 with engine 651  
15 Further turn the crankcase drain screw (10) and drain coolant Model 222 with engine 651
IMPORTANT Catch coolant in a suitable container.
 
  Pour in     
16 Tighten drain screw (4) and detach drain hose (3) from drain fitting (2)    
17 Tighten coolant pump drain screw (5) at coolant pump (1) and detach drain hose (3) from fitting Model 217, 222 with engine 276.8

18 Push drain hose (3) onto crankcase drain screw (10) Engine 651 in model 222  
19 Tighten down crankcase drain screw (10) Engine 651 in model 222
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Coolant drain plug on crankcase

20 Install heat shield (14) Engine 651 in model 222
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Heat shield on starter
*BA15.30-P-1004-01P 
21 Install heat shield (12) Engine 651 in model 222
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, heat shield to engine support
*BA22.10-P-1003-02A 
22 Install catalytic converter DPF unit Engine 651 in model 222 AR49.10-P-5501OLF
23 Add coolant to coolant expansion reservoir and bleed engine cooling system   AR20.00-P-1142-04A

25 Check engine cooling system for leaktightness   AR20.00-P-1010LF 
26 Install front and center engine compartment paneling   AR61.20-P-1105LF
DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
27 Perform an engine test run and check engine cooling system for proper operation    
28 Close engine hood
