1 Release pressure in AIRmatic system using diagnostic system    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04B
2 Remove front luggage compartment lining Model 217.4

3 Partially open soft top Model 217.4

IMPORTANT Leave soft top bow and soft top compartment cover in upright position
 
4 Operate trunk partition switch Model 217.4

IMPORTANT Raise the trunk partition (13).
 
5 Raise trunk partition (13) and fix in place using a suitable tool Model 217

6 Fold trim (14) to one side Model 217.4

IMPORTANT Until the screws/bolts (6) of the rear shock absorber are accessible.

INSTALLATION NOTES
Install the soundproofing (3) or section correctly.
Acoustic problems can otherwise occur.
 
12 Fold up soundproofing under the rear shelf Model 217.3

13 Cut service flap (4) into rear shelf at perforation (arrow B) and fold inward Model 222

14 Tear open soundproofing (3) over belt retractor at perforation (arrow C) and push toward rear Model 222

Install the soundproofing (3) correctly. Acoustic problems can otherwise occur.
 
15 Detach pressure line (5) from corresponding suspension strut (7) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 217

18 Disconnect electrical connectors (8) from suspension strut (7) and unhook from line bracket    
19 Detach cover from spring control arm (9)    
20 Detach suspension strut (7) from spring control arm (9) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Make sure that the suspension strut (7) is installed at the correct position at the spring control arm (9). AR35.20-P-0114LF

21 Loosen threaded connection securing spring control arm (9) to rear axle carrier (10) IMPORTANT Do not detach the spring control arm (9) from the rear axle carrier (10).

23 Unscrew nuts securing torsion bar linkage (11) to wheel carrier (12) and torsion bar TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 217

24 Pull wheel carrier (12) downward and press torsion bar linkage (11) out of torsion bar    
25 Press torsion bar linkage (11) out of wheel carrier (12) and remove downward    
26 Detach spring control arm (9) from wheel carrier (12) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace bolt.

27 Fold spring control arm (9) down NOTES
Fold the spring control arm (9) down carefully. The wheel carrier (12) will otherwise be damaged.
 
28 Lower vehicle slightly NOTES
Do not lower vehicle too far.
The folded-down spring control arm (9) will otherwise be damaged.
 
29 Unscrew nuts (6) from suspension strut (7) and remove suspension strut (7) from below IMPORTANT Helper required.

INSPECT Check     
30 Check suspension strut (7) When reinstalling suspension strut (7).
If suspension strut (7) is damaged:

Replace suspension strut (7)

31 Dispose of damaged suspension strut (7) correctly When replacing suspension strut (7).
IMPORTANT Observe disposal regulations.
 
32 Determine length of suspension strut (7) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Compare the determined length of the suspension strut (7) with the leaflet for the new suspension strut (7).
If the determined length differs:

Do not install the new suspension strut (7).
 
33 Install in the reverse order    
34 Check AIRmatic system for leaktightness   AR32.22-P-8100LF
