DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1.1 Relieve pressure completely in the front suspension struts using the diagnostic system ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 217, 222
without CODE 487 (Active Body Control (ABC))

2 Deactivate easy entry/exit feature IMPORTANT Disabling takes place via the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu of the multifunction display, see vehicle-operator's manual.  
3 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with holding device SPECIAL TOOL Retainer device Figure
4 Set DIRECT SELECT gear selector switch to position "N" and release parking brake

11 Remove engine covers (1)    
12 Remove engine compartment covers (3a, 3b, 3c)

14 Empty air conditioning system, evacuate   AR83.30-P-1760LF
15 Suction off oil from expansion reservoir (ABC) (5) Vehicles with code (487) Active Body Control (ABC)

17 Detach hydraulic hose ABC (6) from expansion reservoir ABC (5), set aside and fasten with the cable tie to the engine    
18 Disconnect refrigerant line (7) at engine compartment connecting point and close off openings with stop plugs SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Figure
19 Fasten refrigerant line (7) in engine compartment with a cable tie to engine    
20 Detach purge line (8) on purging switchover valve    
21 Detach vacuum line (9) at firewall and fasten with cable tie to the engine    
22 Disconnect engine wiring harness on the vehicle side   AR01.00-P-2410-02LFB
23 Remove catalytic converters (22)   AR49.10-P-7100LF
24 Detach steering coupling (23) on lower steering shaft ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 217

NOTES
The steering wheel must not be turned when the steering coupling (23) has been detached. The clock spring contact will be destroyed otherwise.

25 Secure radiator and fan unit (24) with a tensioning strap against falling down    
26 Detach coolant vent line (10) and fasten to the side    
27 Unlock grommet on coolant hose from low-temperature circuit switchover valve to oil cooler, pull out grommet downwards and drain coolant from the low-temperature circuit

28 Disconnect coolant hose (11) for low-temperature circuit and fasten to one side    
29 Disconnect coolant hose (12) for low-temperature circuit and fasten to one side   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
30 Remove upper coolant hose (13)   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
31 Disconnect coolant hose (14) at coolant line for ATL    
32 Disconnect coolant hose from low-temperature circuit switchover valve (Y73/1) to engine at connecting point

33 Disconnect both coolant hoses (15, 16) at oil cooler (17)   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
34 Remove screw/bolt (18) at fan unit (24)    
35 Disconnect coolant hose (19) at firewall   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
36 Remove low-temperature circuit cooler (25) in wheel well at the front right   AR20.20-P-7441-01RQ
37 Remove bottom coolant hose (26)   AR09.41-P-1311-01AL
38 Unhook Low-temperature circuit circulation pump 1 (M43/6) at bracket

39 Disconnect electrical connections (27, 28) on actuator motor of the electric power steering    
40 Detach electrical line (29) for electric power steering on front axle carrier (30)    
41 Disconnect electrical connection (39) on low-temperature circuit switchover valve (Y73/1)

42 Detach coolant hose from low-temperature circuit switchover valve (Y73/1) at low-temperature circuit circulation pump 1 (M43/6)

43 Detach bracket at front axle carrier (30)    
44 Fasten low-temperature circuit switchover valve (Y73/1), low-temperature circuit circulation pump 1 (M43/6) and fasten all coolant hoses in the area to the side in the wheel well

45 Detach oil cooler (17) at fan unit (24) and fasten with a cable tie to engine IMPORTANT Do not disconnect oil lines at oil cooler (17).  
46 Detach engine oil lines (31, 32) at engine oil cooler, close off with grommet and tie up with cable tie to engine SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Figure
47 Detach lower refrigerant line on condenser for the A/C ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 217

56 Unclip electrical lines for rpm sensors and the brake wear indicator contact sensor from holders and fasten in wheel well    
57 Unclip brake lines from brackets on suspension struts    
58 Detach brake caliper from brake caliper supports and fasten with attached brake lines in wheel well   AR42.10-P-0070LF
59 Unclip bracket at front axle carrier (30)    
60 Disconnect electrical connections at the suspension struts ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 217, 222
with CODE M005 (4MATIC)

61 Detach upper transverse control arm to steering knuckles   AR33.20-P-0500LF

66 Support front axle carrier (30) with lifting platform and aggregate mount and secure whole engine transmission unit against slipping and falling down with a tensioning strap IMPORTANT When doing so ensure that mounting plates are evenly aligned.  
67 Remove rear engine crossmember (35) with the rear engine mount NOTES
Never use impact wrench/driver or compressed air tools for screwing in or unscrewing the screw/bolts.
Otherwise the threads can get damaged.

68 Apply colored marking of the propeller shaft position to the transmission output flange. NOTES
For installation restore of the works-side installation position.
Drive train vibrations can occur otherwise.
 
69 Detach propeller shaft (36) from transmission output flange   AR41.10-P-0050LF
70 Remove screw/bolts (37) from longitudinal members INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace screw/bolts (37).  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, front axle carrier at rear to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1002-01P 
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, front axle carrier at front to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1001-01P 
71 Lower engine transmission unit with front axle carrier (30) NOTES
The engine and transmission must not impact on the body panels or major assemblies, lines and hoses must not be pinched or put under tension.
Damage can otherwise occur.
 
72 Install in the reverse order    
73 Check cooling system for leaktightness   AR20.00-P-1010LF
74 Fill and bleed active body control (ABC) ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 217, 222

76 Read out fault memory using the diagnostic system and clear if necessary

DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
77 Carry out an engine test run, checking the engine for proper operation and leaktightness
