Charge Battery While Driving, Basic Function - GF54.10-P-1002A
MODEL ALL (CAR)
Overview
This document contains the following information:
- General
- Function requirement
- Charging types
- 12 V on-board electrical system battery
- 48 V on-board electrical system battery (vehicles with 48 V technology)
- High-voltage battery (hybrid vehicles)
General
Charging of the battery while driving assures vehicle mobility and it provides a stable supply of electrical energy for all electrical consumers. The energy management calculates the charge level of the battery beforehand. For the charging process, it is necessary to determine the specified voltage which must be present at the terminals of the battery in order to charge the battery in an optimum manner.
Function requirement
- Engine running or drive train operational
Charging types
While driving, the battery can be charged by various measures, depending on the version of the on-board electrical system. In all cases, additional electrical energy is either generated or provided by another energy source (vehicles with 48 V technology, hybrid vehicles).
12 V on-board electrical system battery
The 12 V on-board electrical system battery is charged by one of the following measures:
- Energy generation through 12 V alternator
- Energy transfer from other energy sources (e.g. hybrid vehicles)
48 V on-board electrical system battery (vehicles with 48 V technology)
The 48 V on-board electrical system battery is charged by one of the following measures irrespective of the vehicle version involved:
- Energy generation through starter-alternator
- Energy transfer from 12 V on-board electrical system (vehicles without starter-alternator)
High-voltage battery (hybrid vehicles)
The high-voltage battery is charged through energy generated by the electric machine in alternator mode.
