REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Relieve all pressure in front suspension struts with diagnostic system Vehicles with code 489 (AIRMATIC (air suspension with continuous adjustment damping))  
2 Deactivate easy entry/exit function Vehicles with code 275 (Memory package (driver's seat, steering column, mirrors))  
3 Turn front wheels to straight-ahead position and secure steering wheel with holding device NOTES
The steering wheel must not be turned when detaching steering coupling.
Otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

4 Set DIRECT SELECT gear selector switch to position "N" and release parking brake    
5 Detach ground line from battery NOTES
The ground line on battery must always  be detached before beginning work on fuel system.
Pressure will be built up in the fuel system otherwise upon opening a vehicle door or the liftgate.

6 Secure vehicle on vehicle lift   AR00.60-P-0100GZ
7 Remove front engine cover    
8 Remove front section of the partition wall on the right and left otherwise    
9 Remove corresponding underfloor paneling   AR61.30-P-1001GQ
10 Drain coolant at radiator   AR20.00-P-1142GQ
NOTES Notes on coolant   AH20.00-N-2080-01A
11 Blow out coolant for low-temperature water circuit    
12 Remove air filter housing (1) on the right and left with engine air intake duct (2) upstream of the air filter    
13 Remove fan unit   AR20.40-P-5050MLJ
14 Disconnect engine wiring harness on the vehicle side   AR01.00-P-2410-02MLJ
15 Remove air inlet box upper section (6) on the right   AR82.30-P-6400GZ
16 Detach coolant line (45) from thermostat housing    
17 Detach coolant line from heating cooler on partition wall SPECIAL TOOL Hose clamp pliers Fig 10
18 Disconnect bleed line (13) for charge air cooler at separating point    
19 Detach coolant return line (15) on oil filter housing    
20 Disconnect coolant line (14) from expansion reservoir    
21 Disconnect coolant feed line (10)    
22 Disconnect coolant hose (18) on additional radiator in wheel arch    
23 Disconnect coolant line (11) on lower coolant line (12)    
24 Disconnect lower coolant line (12) on cooler   AR09.41-P-1311-01AL
25 Disconnect additional oil cooler lines (19) ENGINE 157 in MODEL 166  
26 Disconnect alternator/starter wiring harness (7) on the vehicle side and lay on engine   AR01.00-P-2410-02MLJ
27 Disconnect electric steering wiring harness (8) on the vehicle side and lay on engine   AR01.00-P-2410-02MLJ
28 Unfasten purge line (5) and place to one side    
29 Disconnect vacuum line (4) for brake booster   AR09.41-P-1311-01AL
30 Remove ME-SFI [ME] control unit   AR07.08-P-7008MLJ
31 Suction off hydraulic fluid from expansion reservoir for Active Roll Stabilization ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (Active driving stability (stability))
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Hand pump Fig 6
32 Loosen oil line (17) from hydraulic pump intake manifold ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (Active driving stability (stability))
 
33 Loosen ground strap on A/C compressor AdBlue®   AR83.55-P-5300GQ
34 Detach refrigerant lines on condenser and on engine compartment connecting point   AR83.55-P-5300GQ
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, high-pressure line to condenser/engine compartment connecting point/expansion valve *BA83.30-P-1009-01J 
35 Detach steering coupling (3)   AR46.10-P-8000GQ
36 Detach bleed line from front axle transmission on heat shield    
37 Detach front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050EW
38 Remove front sections for front fender liner (20)   AR88.10-P-1310GQ
39 Remove underfloor panelings (36, 44)   AR61.30-P-1001GQ
40 Disconnect high-pressure line (32) at connecting point and detach at frame floor assembly ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (Active driving stability (stability))
IMPORTANT Seal openings using stop plugs.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace seal.

41 Disconnect low-pressure line (31) at connecting point ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 166
with CODE 468 (Active driving stability (stability))
IMPORTANT Seal openings using stop plugs.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace seal.
 
    SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 9
42 Detach return flow oil cooling line (23) and feed line oil cooling line (25) of the transmission at connecting point below the ALT ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 166 with TRANSMISSION 722.9
IMPORTANT Seal openings using stop plugs.

43 Disconnect air ducting for engine bearing cooling (16) on the right and left at cooler    
44 Unclip brake lines on steering knuckles (29)    
45 Disconnect electrical connection on brake pad contact sensor    
46 Detach electrical line for brake pad contact sensor on brake caliper (28) and unclip on steering knuckle (29)    
47 Detach brake caliper (28) on brake caliper supports   AR42.10-P-0070GZ
IMPORTANT Fasten brake caliper (28) with attached lines to reinforcements in wheel well and secure against falling down.
48 Detach wheel speed sensors at steering knuckles (29), unclip from brackets and place to one side   AR42.30-P-0712GZ
49 Detach upper transverse control arm on steering knuckles (29)   AR33.25-P-0400GZ
50 Detach suspension struts at lower control arm (30)   AR32.25-P-1017GQ
51 Remove shield (40) on transfer case (39) ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 166 with TRANSMISSION 722.9
with CODE 430 (On & off-road package)
 
52 Disconnect electrical connections on absolute sensor, actuator motor and switchover valve at transfer case (39) ENGINE 157, 278 in MODEL 166 with TRANSMISSION 722.9
with CODE 430 (On & off-road package)
 
53 Detach drive shaft (41) on transmission output flange for transfer case (39) Tightening procedure for rear propeller shaft to transfer case
IMPORTANT Apply colored identification of propeller shaft position relative to transmission output flange in order when installing to reproduce installation position created at plant as otherwise drive line vibrations can occur.

54 Remove NOx storage catalytic converter (38) on the right and left   AR49.10-P-5500MLJ
55 Remove screw/bolts for stiffening plate (33) on longitudinal members IMPORTANT Do not remove screw/bolts (27) for front axle carrier (26) on frame floor assembly.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, stiffening plate to longitudinal member *BA33.10-P-1002-01I 
56 Remove stiffening plates (37, 43) If installed.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, stiffening plate to body *BA33.10-P-1003-01I 
57 Relieve fuel pressure through service valve   AR07.03-P-1460-01VA
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Protective cap on service valve *BA07.03-P-1007-01E 
    SPECIAL TOOL Pressure hose Fig 8
58 Disconnect fuel line at connecting point for low-pressure line IMPORTANT Seal openings using stop plugs.  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Union nut, fuel line to fuel distributor *BA07.03-P-1001-01E 
    SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 9
59 Support front axle carrier (26) with lifting platform and aggregate mount and secure whole engine transmission unit against slipping and falling down with a tensioning strap IMPORTANT When doing so ensure that mounting plates are evenly aligned.

60 Remove rear engine crossmember (35) with the rear engine mount   AR22.10-P-1180GQ
NOTES Notes on bolted connections with self tapping screws   AH00.00-P-0007-01SF
61 Remove screw/bolts (27) from longitudinal members   AR33.10-P-0100GQ
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new screw/bolts (27).
62 Lower engine transmission unit and front axle carrier (26) IMPORTANT Ensure that engine does not touch any body panels or major assemblies and that no lines are pinched or damaged.  
63 Install in the reverse order    
64 Check cooling system for leaktightness   AR20.00-P-1010GQ
65 Fill and bleed ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM MODEL 166 with ENGINE 157, 278
with CODE 468 (ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM)

66 Check transmission oil level and correct if necessary   AR27.00-P-0270W
67 Perform wheel alignment check   AR40.20-P-0200GQ
68 Read out fault memory using the diagnostic system and clear if necessary    
REFER TO SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEMS     AD00.00-P-2000-04A
DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
69 Carry out an engine test run, checking the engine for proper operation and leaktightness    
70 Check engine oil level
