Location
The reversing camera is above the license plate in the handle strip of the liftgate.
Task
The backup camera does the following:
- Records surrounding area to the rear of the vehicle
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Actuation of components
- Output of signals
Records surrounding area to the rear of the vehicle
The reversing camera is an optical parking and maneuvering aid. Its tasks include the capturing of pictures of the area to the rear of the vehicle, the generation of dynamic guide lines and the sending of the video picture to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3).
The pictures captured by the reversing camera are processed and electronically corrected accordingly by the integrated control unit before being displayed in the audio/COMAND display (A40/8).
The reversing camera is supplied with voltage (circuit 30g) via the battery compartment prefuse box (F33).
The reversing camera is automatically calibrated with the aid of the integrated control unit.
Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in over the chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2).
The signals are read in by the reversing camera control unit via chassis CAN 2.
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.
Actuation of components
The components are actuated via chassis CAN 2.
The signals are transmitted by the reversing camera control unit via chassis CAN 2.

Output of signals
The reversing camera sends the picture data over an analog video interface to the COMAND controller unit, and with code (498) Japan version to the electronic reversing camera (N93/3).
Design
The reversing camera is a color picture camera with a wide-angle lens (angle of vision > 130°) and integrated control unit.
