Remove/Install Rear Axle Shaft - AR35.30-P-0620G

Model 460 with rear axle 741 

with drum brakes on the rear axle 

Model 461 with rear axle 741 (except 741.171/52/53)

Do not pour transmission oil into beverage bottles.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Detach rear wheel and tire assemblies. Model 460 with rear axle 741 with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 461 with rear axle 741 (except 741.171/52/53) with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 463 with rear axle 741 (except 741.52/53) with drum brakes on the rear axle  
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   Model 460 with rear axle 741 with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 461 with rear axle 741 (except 741.171/52/53) with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 463 with rear axle 741 (except 741.52/53) up to model year 2019 with drum brakes on the rear axle AP40.10-P-4050G
2 Remove safety screw (122) from brake drum (119).    
3 Remove brake drum (119). IMPORTANT The parking brake must be disengaged completely.
If the brake drum (119) cannot be removed,
 
     
    release brake shoes by turning back the automatic adjuster.  
    Model 460 with rear axle 741 with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 461 with rear axle 741 (except 741.171/52/53) with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 463 with rear axle 741 (except 741.52/53) up to model year 2019 with drum brakes on the rear axle AR42.10-P-0169-01GG
4 Remove lower return spring (1) of brake shoes. SPECIAL TOOL Removal and installation tool Fig 2
5 Remove nuts (3) of bearing cap (4) from axle tube.    
6 Remove rear axle shaft (2). NOTES On vehicles with ABS, do not damage the pulse ring.
Otherwise the ABS is deactivated.
 
7 Remove O-ring from compressed ring.    
8 Remove seal between bearing cap (4) and brake carrier plate.    
INSTALLING Install     
9 Insert seal between bearing cap (4) and brake carrier plate. IMPORTANT Replace seal.  
10 Install O-ring on compressed ring. IMPORTANT Replace O-ring.  
11 Install rear axle shaft (2). NOTES On vehicles with ABS, do not damage the pulse ring.
Otherwise the ABS is deactivated.
 
    NOTES The marking of the direction of rotation on the rear axle shaft (2) must match the actual direction of rotation during forward travel. Otherwise, greater axle damage will occur.  
    IMPORTANT Before sliding in, make sure that the O-ring is on the compressed ring.  
12 Attach nuts (3) of bearing cap (4). NOTES Attach nuts (3) evenly in a crosswise pattern until the bearing cap (4) makes contact with the axle tube. Then tighten each in a crosswise pattern by half a turn until the specified tightening torque is reached. Otherwise, the bearing cap (4) will work loose.
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut securing bearing cap to axle tube

INSPECT Check     
13 Check end play of rear axle shaft (2). Model 460 with rear axle 741 with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 461 with rear axle 741 (except 741.171/52/53)
with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 463 with rear axle 741 (except 741.52/53)
with drum brakes on the rear axle End play of rear axle shaft (after increased mileage)

    Model 460 with rear axle 741 with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 461 with rear axle 741 (except 741.171/52/53)
with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 463 with rear axle 741 (except 741.52/53)
with drum brakes on the rear axle End play of rear axle shaft (new condition) If the end play of the rear axle shaft is outside the tolerance,

    replace worn component parts. AR35.30-P-7351G 
14 Check lower return spring (1) of brake shoes for wear and damage. If problems exist,
 
    replace lower return spring (1).  
15 Install lower return spring (1) of brake shoes. SPECIAL TOOL Removal and installation tool Fig 2
16 Install brake drum (119).    
17 Screw safety screw (122) into brake drum (119). IMPORTANT Replace safety screw (122).  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Safety screw, brake drum to wheel hub *BA42.10-P-1001-16A

19 Adjust automatic brake adjuster. Model 460 with rear axle 741 with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 461 with rear axle 741 (except 741.171/52/53) with drum brakes on the rear axle Model 463 with rear axle 741 (except 741.52/53) up to model year 2019 with drum brakes on the rear axle AR42.10-P-0169-01GG
