Adjust wheel bearing play - AR33.20-P-0300CW

MODEL 172 

MODEL 204 (except 204.077/277/377/9) without 4MATIC

REMOVING Removing     
1 Remove left or right front wheel Model 172 AP40.10-P-4050V
Model 204, 207 AP40.10-P-4050CW
2 Screw in wheel bolt (48a) opposite the safety screw (9f) far enough until the brake disk (6) is fixed in place    
3 Press brake pads back into brake caliper    
4 Pull off hub cap (9e) SPECIAL TOOL Removal and installation tool Fig 2
INSPECT Check and adjust     
5 Loosen hexagon socket head screw (9i) and tighten clamp nut (9d) while turning the front wheel hub (5) lightly IMPORTANT To set up the wheel bearing.  
6 Loosen clamping nut (9d) slightly IMPORTANT A small amount of play must be noticeable.  
7 Mount dial indicator (022) with dial indicator holder (015) to brake disk (6) SPECIAL TOOL Dial indicator Fig 3

8 Adjust wheel bearing play by turning (arrow) the clamping nut (9d) in stages and pushing and pulling the brake disk (6) firmly back and forth IMPORTANT Do not twist or tilt the wheel hub during the measurement. Correct measurement is only possible by pulling and pushing parallel to the wheel axle.
NOTES A too small wheel bearing play is adjusted due to incorrect measurement. This can then lead to wheel bearing damage.

9 Tighten hexagon socket head screw (9i) and check wheel bearing play again TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 172 *BA33.20-P-1001-01Q 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Model 204, 207 *BA33.20-P-1001-01N 
10 Remove the dial gauge (022) and its stand (015)    
INSTALLING Install     
11 Fill hub cap (9e) with high-temperature roller bearing grease    
REFER TO CAPACITIES & SPECIFICATIONS High temperature antifriction bearing grease (NLGI grade 2) Specification 265.1 High temperature antifriction bearing grease (NLGI grade 2). See https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/index.php?language_id=1
12 Mount hub cover (9e) SPECIAL TOOL Removal and installation tool Fig 2
13 Remove wheel bolt (48a)    
14 Mount front wheel Model 172 AP40.10-P-4050V

DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work Before starting engine, actuate brake pedal several times until the pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
15 Operate the brake pedal several times until brake pads make contact with the brake disks (6) IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.
