Remove/install rack-and-pinion steering - AR46.20-P-0600CW

MODEL 204.0/2/3 without CODE 211 (Direct-Steer system)

DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize hydraulic system completely before starting any work on it. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove front engine cover Model 204.0/2, 207 with ENGINE 272, model 204.0/2/3, 207 with ENGINE 276  
2 Remove the left engine intake air duct MODEL 204.0/2, 207 with ENGINE 272  
3 Extract oil from power steering expansion reservoir SPECIAL TOOL Hand pump Fig 7
4 Remove the front wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050CW
5.1 Remove engine compartment paneling MODEL 204.0/2/3., 207 with gasoline engine  
MODEL 204.0/2 with ENGINE 156, 271, 272, 274, 276
without CODE 211 (Direct-Steer system)
MODEL 204.3 with ENGINE 156, 271, 274, 276

5.2 Remove lower bottom sections of soundproofing MODEL 204.0/2/3., 207 with diesel engine

6 Detach tie rods (1) from steering knuckles (2)   AR46.40-P-0200-02CW
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, tie rod to steering knuckle *BA46.40-P-1001-01N

7 Deactivate easy entry/exit function With code (275) Memory package (driver seat, steering column, mirrors)  
8 Turn steering wheel into center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and fix in position with retaining device NOTES
The steering wheel must not be turned when the steering coupling (6) has been detached. Otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.

9 Detach steering coupling (6) from rack-and- pinion steering (10)   AR46.10-P-8000CW 
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace self-locking nut.  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut/bolt, steering coupling to steering shaft *BA46.10-P-1001-01M 
10 Disconnect electrical connector from speed-sensitive power steering (Y10) With code (213) Speed-sensitive power steering
IMPORTANT If necessary, detach cable tie from electrical line.
 
11 Remove bolt (7) from rack-and-pinion steering (10) NOTES
Before opening the hydraulic system, thoroughly clean the area surrounding the separation point.
Even the smallest dirt particles, introduced into the hydraulic components, can lead to malfunctions and a total failure of the hydraulic system.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, clamp plate, high-pressure line/return line to rack-and-pinion steering control head *BA46.20-P-1003-01N 
12 Pry clamping plate (9) off rack-and-pinion steering (10) and pull out oil lines (13, 14) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace O-rings.  
SPECIAL TOOL Record plug Fig 5
13 Support rack-and-pinion steering (10) and secure to prevent it from falling down    
14 Remove screw/bolt (10c) from additional bracket or additional mounting of rack-and- pinion steering (10) to front axle carrier (3) Model 207 with 4Matic  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, steering gear rack-and-pinion steering to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1010-01N 
15 Detach rack-and-pinion steering (10) from front axle carrier (3) by unscrewing bolts (10a, 10b) IMPORTANT For engine 156 the retaining plate (8) is fastened using 4 bolts (10a) to the front axle carrier (3).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace nuts and bolts.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Fastening, rack-and-pinion steering to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1001-01N 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, retaining plate for rack-and-pinion steering to front axle carrier *BA46.20-P-1002-01N 
16 Take out retaining plate (8) with rack-and- pinion steering (10)    
17 Install in the reverse order    
18 Fill power steering pump and bleed NOTES
Before opening the hydraulic system, thoroughly clean the area surrounding the separation point.
