Tasks
The Audio/COMAND display serves the uniform presentation of user-relevant operating and information windows as well as the presentation of video picture information. On vehicles with CODE 867 (SPLITVIEW), the Audio/COMAND display also allows for two different views to be shown at the same time. This function enables the driver and front passenger to access video picture information or vehicle system information at the same time and independently from one another (dual viewing mode). The operation of the Audio/COMAND display for the front passenger occurs using a remote control (the signals are read in by the COMAND controller unit (A40/3)). A uniform picture can be output via a mono output mode. Due to the design of the Audio/COMAND display, the visual range of the driver (1) and visual range of the front passenger (2) are defined in a fixed manner and an insufficient picture quality is possible in the overlap area (3) of the visual ranges.
In order to prevent overheating of the Audio/COMAND display, it is cooled by an internal blower motor. Cooling is controlled internally in the Audio/COMAND display. The temperature of the Audio/COMAND display is kept below 85 °C during operation and below 95 °C with the vehicle at a standstill.
The Audio/COMAND display performs the following individual tasks:
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- Telematics CAN (CAN A)
- Low voltage differential signal (LVDS) interface
Telematics CAN
The Audio/COMAND display receives control signals from the audio equipment (e.g. brightness) via telematics CAN.
LVDS interface
The Audio/COMAND display receives all of the information required display the content from the audio equipment via the LVDS interface.
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated internally.
Variants
"Mid" variant (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer) or CODE 523 (MB Audio 20 APS radio) or CODE 511 (Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer) or CODE 525 (MB Audio 50 APS radio)):
- 5.8" Color screen (as of 1.6.12: Fixed)
- 400 X 240 pixel resolution
"High" variant (with CODE 512 (COMAND APS incl. DVD changer), CODE 526 (COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation)), CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) or CODE 528 (COMAND incl. DVD changer)):
- 7" Color screen (as of 1.7.11: Fixed)
- 800X480 pixel resolution
Variant with CODE 867 (SPLITVIEW) (for left-hand drive vehicles or for right-hand drive vehicles):
- 8"-Thin film transistor (TFT) color SPLITVIEW display in 16:9 format, fixed
- 800X480 pixel resolution
- In order to prevent damage to the Audio/COMAND display, it is protected by a tinted acrylic glass panel
The CODE 867 (SPLITVIEW) can be deactivated at the factory for vehicles with CODE 494 (USA version) as the function is not yet legally allowed in all regions. The activation can be performed by the dealer, however, if it conforms to the law.
