Function requirements, Rear Seat Entertainment system, general 

Rear Seat Entertainment system, general 

The Rear Seat Entertainment system refers to the entire entertainment system for rear passengers. The Rear Seat Entertainment system comprises the following main components:

IMPORTANT Headphones: As of 1.6.10, radio frequency headphones (cordless) are used; up to 31.5.10, infrared headphones (cordless). The cable-connected headphones are not part of the package contents.

The following components are also used by the Rear Seat Entertainment system but are not essential for using the Rear Seat Entertainment system:

The Rear Seat Entertainment system is operated by remote control.

The respective rear display must be selected using the "roller" control of the remote control. The control signals are transmitted to the remote control and the respective display over the infrared interfaces.

A headphones socket is integrated into each display to which headphones can be directly connected (cable). The volume is adjusted using the "VOL +" and "VOL -" controls on the remote control.

Additionally, the preset volume can be set via the volume control of the respective headphones.

The Rear Seat Entertainment system consists of the following partial functions:

Function requirements for switch on and off characteristics 

Switch on/off characteristics 

When the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control is actuated, the position of the "Roller" control determines whether the left rear display or the right rear display is switched on or off. The Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched off if both rear displays are switched off.

After switching on, the last application stored in the left or right rear display is shown on the respective display. When switching off, the last application of a menu item executed on the display is stored in the relevant display.

The "Rear entertainment switch on/off behavior and system settings" function consists of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for switching on/off using the remote control 

The switch-on signal from the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control and the position of the "Roller" control on the remote control are transmitted to the respective display via the infrared interface on the remote control.

The respective display forwards the switch-on signal to the DVD player via telematics CAN. At the same time, the respective display generates the audio and picture signals for the corporate identity (CI) screen for approx. t = 6 s. The respective display then shows the applications last stored.

The switch-off signal from the "ON/OFF" control on the remote control and the position of the "Roller" control on the remote control are sent to the remote control and to the respective display over the infrared interfaces.

The respective display forwards the switch-off signal to the DVD player via telematics CAN.

Function sequence for automatic switch-off through removal of the transmitter key 

When the transmitter key is removed from the electronic ignition lock control unit, a message that the transmitter key was removed is shown on the respective display and the user is asked whether he/she would like to continue with the application. If "Continue" is selected using the remote control, the function remains active for approximately 30 minutes. The Rear Seat Entertainment system is then switched off. The Rear Seat Entertainment system is switched off immediately if the prompt asking whether the application should be continued is answered with "No". The message on the respective display is generated by the display itself.

The DVD player and the respective displays receive the status circuit 15C OFF (transmitter key removed) from the electronic ignition lock control unit via the following route:

System settings 

In the "System" menu item, additional settings can be made following activation. The "System" menu item with menus and submenus is selected, operated and adjusted on the display using the remote control.

The following settings, for example, can be configured via the "System" menu item in the application field on the respective display:

Additional function requirements for disc applications 

Disk applications 

The video or audio source is automatically detected. The switched-on left rear display or right rear display shows the video or audio source in the "Disc" menu item. The "Disc applications" partial function comprises the following partial functions:

Function sequence for playing back a disc 

The DVD drive integrated into the DVD player decodes the digital data of the inserted disc (e.g. video DVD, audio CD or DVD, MP3-CD or DVD) and routes these internally to the DVD player.

The DVD player generates the analog audio and picture signals for the user interface of the "Disc" menu item on the respective display based on the digital data from the disc. The menus and submenus in the "Disc" menu item are shown on the display.

The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display.

Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for disc applications 

The DVD player sends analog picture signals via a Y/C line (Y - brightness (luminance)/C - color information (chrominance)) to each display. The display uses them to generate digital picture signals for picture display. Upon reception of the analog audio signals from the DVD player, the respective display generates the digital audio signals. These digital audio signals are sent via the infrared or radio interface of the respective display to the infrared or radio interface for the relevant headphones (cordless). Volume can only be adjusted using the volume control integrated in the headphones.

If on vehicles with the COMAND controller unit, "RSE Audio" is selected as the audio source in the "AUX" menu, the analog signals from the DVD player are forwarded via a direct line to the COMAND controller unit and can be emitted via the speaker system from there. In vehicles except CODE 810 (Sound system) and except CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), the COMAND controller unit outputs the audio signals via the speaker system. In vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) or with CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), the COMAND controller unit forwards the audio signals via MOST to the sound amplifier control unit, which actuates the speaker system.

IMPORTANT Further information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output, function" document.

The volume on the COMAND controller unit can be set using the following controls:

IMPORTANT The remote control can also be used to control the volume on the COMAND controller unit when the "roller" control is set to "COMAND". The control signals of the COMAND controller unit are internally processed.

The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded via the telematics CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

As of 1.3.13 the control signals from the + and - buttons for setting specific functions and volume control are transferred to the COMAND controller unit via the following route:

Additional function requirements for AUX applications 

AUX applications 

Additional video units or audio equipment (e.g. portable DVD player, video cameras, MP3player or game consoles) can be connected to the rear entertainment system via the AUX connection of a display or the DVD player. An equipment-specific interface is not provided by the respective display or by the DVD player in the "AUX" menu item for the video units or audio equipment. The video or audio devices are operated using the video or audio device itself.

The connected media sources are played back by the Rear Seat Entertainment system if they are manually selected via "AUX".

If a video source is connected, this is then automatically recognized. The background (headphones) on the display disappears and the video source is played back. If an audio source is connected, the background remains on the display and the audio source is played back. In the "AUX" menu item, the recognized video or audio source is shown on the switched-on display.

If a video unit or audio unit is connected to the AUX jack of a display or the DVD player, the depiction in the "AUX" menu item takes place on whichever display is switched on. Only information on the application currently active is displayed (e.g. radio station).

IMPORTANT The "AUX" menu item is only active on a display that is switched on. It is only necessary to select the respective display using the "Roller" control when the "AUX" menu item is operated via the remote control.

The "AUX applications" function in the Rear Seat Entertainment system is made up of the following subfunctions:

Video unit detected function sequence 

The display or the DVD player automatically recognizes the connection of a video unit to an AUX jack.

The display uses the transmitted data from the video unit to generate the analog or digital video and audio signals and the digital interface of the "AUX" menu item on the display.

The menus and their submenus are displayed on the respective display under the "AUX" menu item. Operation can also take place via the listed controls on the remote control (see operating instructions). The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display.

Audio unit detected function sequence 

The display or the DVD player automatically recognizes the connection of an audio unit to an AUX jack.

The display uses the transmitted data from the audio equipment to generate the analog or digital audio signals and the digital interface of the "AUX" menu item on the display.

The menus and their submenus are displayed to the rear passenger on the respective display under the "AUX" menu item. Operation can also take place via the listed controls on the remote control (see operating instructions).

The remote control signals are sent over the infrared interfaces of the remote control and the respective display.

Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for AUX applications 

The respective display receives analog audio or picture signals via the following routes:

The display generates digital signals from the analog signals. The picture signals are output via the respective display. The display transfers the digital audio signals via the infrared or radio interface of the respective display to the relevant headphones (cordless). Volume can only be adjusted via the volume control integrated in the respective headphones.

IMPORTANT Headphones (cordless): As of 1.6.10, radio frequency headphones; up to 31.5.10, infrared headphones.

IMPORTANT Headphones (with cord): The display directs the analog audio signals via the integrated headphones socket to the connected headphones.

Reception of media sources from COMAND controller unit 

In the "AUX" menu, under "COMAND", the Rear Seat Entertainment system is provided with a media source managed by the COMAND controller unit that was enabled at the unit via the "Active source to rear" selection for the Rear Seat Entertainment system. The media source can be deactivated at the COMAND controller unit by selecting "Rear off" for the Rear Seat Entertainment system. The "Bluetooth ® audio" media source of the COMAND controller unit cannot be enabled for the Rear Seat Entertainment system.

The video or audio source of the COMAND controller unit is operated via the COMAND controller unit. Simple control functions (e.g. previous/next track) can also be carried out from the respective display or via the remote control.

With the exception of the TV media source up to 1.3.15, which is described separately in the following, the display receives the picture signals via the following route:

The display receives the audio signals via separate lines (no Y/C lines) on the same path.

TV signals can also be transmitted on this path. The DVD player is not directly connected to the tuner unit (A90/4).

The display generates digital signals from the analog signals. The picture signals are output via the respective display. The display transfers the digital audio signals via the infrared or radio interface of the respective display to the relevant headphones (cordless). Volume can only be adjusted via the volume control integrated in the respective headphones.

IMPORTANT Headphones (cordless): As of 1.6.10, radio frequency headphones; up to 31.5.10, infrared headphones.

IMPORTANT Headphones (with cord): The display directs the analog audio signals via the integrated headphones socket to the connected headphones.

Additional function requirements for TV reception (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner) or with CODE 865 (TV tuner)), up to 1.3.15 

TV reception (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner) or with CODE 865 (TV tuner)), up to 1.3.15 

The TV image or the interface is shown after selecting the "TV" menu item in the application bar of the left rear display or right rear display. The TV reception function consists of the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for selection of the TV channel or video text 

The digital TV tuner or the TV tuner (analog/digital) receives the TV signals via direct lines using the following route:

The TV tuner evaluates the TV signals and transmits the analog audio signals via a stereo line and the analog picture signals via a Y/C line to the DVD player. The DVD player forwards the analog audio signals via a stereo line and the analog picture signals via a Y/C line to the respective display. The interface is shown on the respective display. The required TV channel or video text can be selected using the controls on the remote control. The signals from the controls on the remote control are transferred via the infrared interface on the remote control and at the respective display.

The display forwards the infrared signals to the TV tuner via the telematics CAN. The TV tuner evaluates these signals and transmits the analog audio signals via a stereo line and analog picture signals via a Y/C line of the received and selected TV channel back to the DVD player. The DVD player forwards the analog audio signals via a stereo line and the analog picture signals via a Y/C line to the respective display. The interface is shown on the respective display.

Settings in "TV" menu item via remote control function sequence 

The respective display uses the analog picture signals from the DVD player and the digital signals to generate the interface of the "TV" menu item on the respective display. The respective display shows the rear passenger the menus and submenus in the "TV" menu item. The rear passenger can use the remote control to operate the function or make settings.

The signals from the controls on the remote control are transferred via the infrared interfaces to the remote control and to the respective display.

Function sequence for transferring audio and picture signals for TV reception 

The respective display receives the picture signals via the following route:

The display receives the audio signals via separate lines (no Y/C lines) on the same path.

The display generates digital signals from the analog signals. The picture signals are output via the respective display. The display transfers the digital audio signals via the infrared or radio interface of the respective display to the relevant headphones (cordless). Volume can only be adjusted via the volume control integrated in the respective headphones.
