Function requirements

General

The ETC system simplifies the process of payment on toll roads. The ETC system makes payments automatically without the driver having to stop the car.

Function sequence

To transmit and receive the data, the ETC/DSRC antenna (A2/94) and the Electronic Toll Collection control unit (A50/3) are installed in the vehicle. The Electronic Toll Collection control unit communicates with the toll booth via the ETC/DSRC antenna. For automatic payment a special ETC card must be inserted into the Electronic Toll Collection control unit. All information concerning the user and the fees that have already been paid are stored on this card. At the vehicle side, the Electronic Toll Collection control unit is connected to the COMAND controller unit via an RS-232C interface. The COMAND controller unit receives voice output and visual output for the ETC system via this interface.

Voice output takes place when:

The COMAND controller unit performs the voice output via the speaker system. In vehicles with code (810) Sound system or code (811) Advanced sound system, the voice output is transmitted by the COMAND controller unit via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) to the sound system amplifier control unit (N403) and then output via the speaker system.

IMPORTANT More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" document.

Visual outputs (pop-ups) appear on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) when:

The COMAND controller unit transmits the visual output to the Audio/COMAND display via a low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line.
