TV mode, general
The TV tuner (analog/digital) (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner)), the digital TV tuner (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) up to 1.3.15), or the tuner unit (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) as of 2.3.15) make it possible for digital or analog/digital television channels to be received in the vehicle and shown on the Audio/COMAND display.
The TV signals that are received contain video and audio signals. The TV tuner (analog/digital) (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner)), the TV digital tuner (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) up to 1.3.15) or the tuner unit (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) as of 2.3.15) separates the video and audio signals from each other. The TV mode is therefore comprised as follows:

For safety reasons the TV picture is switched off when the vehicle starts to move. When the vehicle is moving, only acoustic playback remains active and a warning appears on the Audio/COMAND display. The COMAND controller unit receives the speed signal via the interior CAN from the instrument cluster.
Operation function sequence
The COMAND controller unit generates the menu displays and transmits them to the Audio/COMAND display via an LVDS line. The control communication (e.g. activation) between the COMAND controller unit and Audio/COMAND display takes place via the telematics CAN.
The TV tuner (analog/digital) (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner)), the TV digital tuner (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) up to 1.3.15) or the tuner unit (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) as of 2.3.15) receives the control signals from the Audio/COMAND control unit via the following route:

The digital TV tuner (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) up to 1.3.15) receives the control signals from the remote control via the integrated infrared interface of the COMAND controller unit. The COMAND controller unit forwards the signals to the digital TV tuner via MOST.
Function sequence for TV mode with remote control and headphones (with CODE 867 (SPLITVIEW))
Equipment with CODE 867 (SPLITVIEW) enables the driver and the front passenger to use the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle, including the display on the Audio/COMAND display at the same time and independent of each other. The TV function can be activated and operated using the remote control. The COMAND controller unit receives the signals from the remote control via the integrated infrared interface. In order to enable undisturbed concentration on the traffic situation for the driver, the front passenger receives the audio signals via headphones. The COMAND controller unit sends the audio signals via an integrated radio interface to the radio frequency headphones. As an option, external cabled headphones can also be used. The cabled headphones receive the audio signals from the COMAND controller unit via the headphones (cabled) electrical connector.

The tuner unit (with CODE 865 (TV tuner)) receives the TV-1 signal via the following route:

After the TV signals have been processed in the TV tuner (analog/digital) (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner)), in the digital TV tuner (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) up to 1.3.15), or in the tuner unit (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) as of 2.3.15), the video signals are output as follows:
- LVDS line (Low-Voltage Differential signal) (as of 2.3.15) or Y/C line (Y - brightness (luminance)/C - color information (chrominance)) (up to 1.3.15)

Function sequence for audio signal
After the TV signals have been processed in the TV tuner (analog/digital) (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner)), in the digital TV tuner (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) up to 1.3.15) or in the tuner unit (with CODE 865 (TV tuner) as of 2.3.15), the audio signals are transferred via MOST to the COMAND controller unit and in vehicles with CODE 810 (Sound system) or CODE 811 (Advanced sound system), via MOST to the sound system amplifier control unit, where they are then amplified.

The TV tuner (analog/digital) (with CODE 863 (Digital/analog TV tuner)) is installed in vehicles except CODE 498 (Japan version) up to 31.5.12. The supplemental information is subdivided into the following categories:

TV reception
TV reception is subdivided into two subcategories:
- Analog TV reception
- Digital TV reception
Analog TV reception
The TV tuner (analog/digital) receives and processes analog terrestrial television programs broadcast in all standards. The audio quality is limited to "MONO".
The TV system operates with a total of three reception modules for video and audio signals. The Phase Locked Loop (PLL) tuners used cover a reception range of 30 to 866 MHz. The TV tuner (analog/digital) supports reception of the "PAL/SECAM" and "NTSC" TV standards here.
The TV tuner (analog/digital) is equipped with four antenna inputs (of which three are assigned), in which the TV signals are fed in by each of the antenna amplifiers. The antennas are not assigned to any particular PLL tuner, but can be used in the same way by any PLL tuner.
Digital TV reception
In addition to analog television stations, it is also possible to receive terrestrial television stations broadcasting digital signals with the antenna structures already present. The Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVB-T) standard is supported. In contrast to analog TV, the audio can be received in stereo here.
The TV tuner (analog/digital) automatically switches from analog to digital TV reception, depending on reception. The user cannot make the switch.
However, the user can prevent switchover between alternative channels as well as between analog and digital reception with the "Fix channel" control function. If stations with matching stations names are received (e.g. ARD analog and digital), only one entry is made in the list of stations.
DVB-T can be used with a conventional antenna to receive more channels and in better quality.

Videotext function: Some stations, primarily in central Europe, offer videotext in addition to their television program. The TV tuner (analog/digital) is therefore equipped with its own videotext decoder. Only videotext broadcast with Latin ASCII characters are supported, i.e. Greek or Cyrillic characters are not supported.

TV reception
As the transmission frequencies for analog TV will be used differently in future, only digital TV will be received in the range from 470 to 710 MHz according to the Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial (DVB-T) standard. In addition to the video compression standard Mpeg 2, Mpeg 4 is also supported. Receiving encoded programs is also possible via an integrated conditional access module.

New services will be offered in the frequency ranges from 90 to 108 MHz and 170 to 222 MHz in future that will be supported by the digital TV tuner.

Videotext function
Some stations, primarily in central Europe, offer videotext in addition to their television program. For this purpose, the TV digital tuner is equipped with a separate video text decoder. Reception of encoded programs is possible in vehicles up to 31.5.12 with a smart card and as of 1.6.12 with a B-CAS SIM card. With digital TV reception, the "one-segment" substandard (TV standard for mobile telephony) is also supported in vehicles as of 1.6.12 in addition to the "full-segment" substandard.

The digital TV tuner provides the following features:
- Digital image storage
- Last settings
- "BML" (Broadcast Markup Language) function: The digital TV tuner supports video text for all available Japanese TV stations. This enables information to be shown similar to a small website on weather, news, etc. By selecting a region in the setting list you can obtain region-specific information.
- "EPG" (Electronic Program Guide) function: The Electronic Program Guide shows information such as start of program, end of program and detailed information on the television programs for each TV station.
- "Bilingual" function: Two languages are supported depending on station availability, e.g. Japanese on the main-sound track and English on the sub-sound track.
