CAN
The COMAND controller unit is a subscriber of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the interior CAN (CAN B):
- The COMAND controller unit receives, e.g. the control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel over the telematics CAN.
- The COMAND controller unit sends control signals to the Audio/COMAND display, for example, via telematics CAN.
- Over the interior CAN, the COMAND controller unit receives, e.g. from the instrument cluster (A1) the signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) as well as from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) it receives, among other things, the rpm signals from the Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) (except model 212.095/195/098/298 and except CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS)), from the regenerative braking system control unit (N30/6) (model 212.095/195/098/298) or from the Premium Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/7) (with CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS)).
- Via interior CAN, the COMAND controller unit sends navigation displays to the instrument cluster for example.
Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)
The COMAND controller unit exchanges data over MOST with the following control units:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with CODE 810 (Sound system) or with CODE 811 (Advanced sound system))
- Tuner unit (A90/4) (with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio), with CODE 537 (Digital radio) or with CODE 865 (TV tuner))
Ethernet
The COMAND controller unit is connected to the diagnostic connector (X11/4) via the Ethernet.

DVD drive
With the aid of the integrated DVD drive, audio CDs, DVDs or video DVDs can be played, and data (e.g. updates) from a navigation DVD can be stored on the internal hard disk.
Navigation and GPS control unit
The navigation processor is integrated into the COMAND controller unit and calculates the location of the vehicle using the incoming antenna signals. It also calculates the vehicle's route after the destination has been entered.
Gyro sensor and 3D acceleration sensor
The gyrosensor and the 3D acceleration sensor are used to determine vehicle direction changes. They are installed in the navigation processor. Calibration is not required.
Control unit for voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The COMAND controller unit processes the voice commands, evaluates them and creates the voice output for the dialog with the user.
