Audio system, general
The following components are available for control of the audio system:
- Control buttons on the COMAND control unit (A40/3)
- Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) (call basic menu and make settings)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) (volume, telephone functions)
- Hands-free system microphone (A67b1)
The Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) provides menu navigation.
The following basic functions can be controlled:
- Basic function "RADIO"
- )"DISC" basic function
- Video and TV basic function
- "NAVI" basic function
- )"TEL" basic function
- "SYS" basic function
Basic function "RADIO"
"RADIO" basic function can be called by pressing the "RADIO" function key. Pressing it several times enables you to switch between the following frequency bands:
- "FM"
- "AM"
When the "RADIO" basic function is called, the corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the Audio/COMAND display:
- Currently set frequency
- Current station from global positioning system (GPS) list (location specific) and memory location (if stored)
- Cursor, with which a different station can be selected.
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The following audio sources can be selected in the application bar:
- "FM"
- "AM"
- "Disk"
- "Memory Card"
- "Music Register"
- "Media Interface" (with code (518) Media Interface)
- "Rear" (with code (864) Rear entertainment system)
- "Aux"
The various menu structures are made visible on the function bar depending on the audio source selected on the application bar.
In the function bar the following submenus can be called up depending on the frequency band selected in the application bar, and then various settings can be made:
- "FM 1" submenu (changes display between "FM 1" and "FM 2") (FM 1, FM 2, frequency entry)
- "Presets" submenu
("Autostore" (automatic search and storage of 10 stations with strongest reception))
- "Sound" submenu
("Treble", "Bass", "Balance/Fader", "Logic7®" (with code (810) Sound system))
- "AM 1" submenu (changes display between "AM 1" and "AM 2") (AM 1, AM 2, frequency entry)
- "TI/Back to AM" submenu (change of "TI" display (Traffic information, fixed frequency at 1620 kHz) or "Back to AM")
- "Presets" submenu
("Autostore" (Automatic search and storage of 10 stations with strongest reception) and list of stored stations)
- "Sound" submenu

)"DISC" basic function
The "DISC" basic function can be called by pressing the "DISC" function key. The corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the audio/COMAND display (readable data carrier inserted):
- Number of tracks on CD or DVD
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist (if present on CD or DVD)
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The various menu structures are made visible on the function bar depending on the audio source selected on the application bar.
When an audio CD/DVD is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:
- "CD" submenu
(normal track sequence, random track sequence, Gracenote Media Database)
- "Record" submenu (audio files are copied as MP3 files onto the hard disk)
- "Tracks" submenu (track list on CD/DVD)
- "Medium" submenu
(1 CD/DVD, 2 Memory card, 3 MUSIC REGISTER, 4 Media Interface, 5 Bluetooth® Audio)
- "Sound" submenu

A track in the track list can be selected with the control buttons on the radio or on the audio/COMAND control panel. The playback position can be changed by pushing and holding the audio/COMAND controller to the right (forward) or left (back).
When a MP3-CD/DVD is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:
- "MP3" submenu
(normal track sequence, random track sequence, random folder, Gracenote Media Database)
- "Folder" submenu
(folder list and track list on CD/DVD)
- "Media" submenu

If the "Music Register" data source is selected, the function bar can be used to call up the following submenus and enable various settings to be made:

Video and TV
The video and TV function can be displayed on the audio/COMAND control panel in the menu item Audio on the application bar on the audio/COMAND display The last video or TV application executed is started.
To start a different video or TV application, it is necessary to go back to the application bar and select the menu item Video.
The following video sources can be selected via the Video menu item:
- TV
- Video DVD
Both the video sources TV and DVD video can be activated with the audio/COMAND control panel. The TV or DVD video image appears on the play field on the audio/COMAND display.
The following submenus can be selected using the function bar:
- "DVD-V", "TV 1" or "TV 2" submenu (display changes depending on selection)
(e.g. brightness, contrast, color, saturation, 16:9 optimized, 4:3, wide screen, Main, Sub; DVD only: DVD functions, medium; TV only: TV 1, TV 2, TV channel input)
- "Presets" submenu

"NAVI" basic function
The map and language data are preinstalled on the hard disk of the COMAND control unit. The card data can be updated by the customer or workshop by installing the data from an update DVD. Installation is also possible while driving.
After inserting the update DVD into the COMAND control unit, a prompt automatically appears asking whether the data is to be installed. After confirmation, installation is accomplished. If installation fails (e.g. due to dead vehicle battery (G1) or damaged DVD), operation can be continued with the old data. After installation, the DVD can be removed.
The "NAVI" basic function can be called by pressing the "NAVI" function key. The default screen appears on the Audio/COMAND display with the following information:
- Current location
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
Application bar and function bar are not shown on the Audio/COMAND display in the full-screen mode. The full-screen mode can be activated via the audio/COMAND control panel.
The navigation basic function can be operated as follows:

The navigation menu allows the following operating functions, some of which include additional subfunctions.
- Destination entry (e.g. with map, 50 characters (Japanese keyboard), points of interest, telephone numbers, ZIP codes, address book, previous destinations, memory points)
- Memory points
- Points of interest (e.g. current position, along route, at destination)
- Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS) information (e.g. test, graph, interrupt, set)
- Settings (e.g. navigation, VICS, edit position, avoid options)
- Home (e.g. guidance, enter, delete)
- Graph
- Discontinue or continue route guidance
Selection or settings via function bar
The following control functions can be activated with the function bar, some of these include additional subfunctions:
- Display (e.g. view (2D, 3D, buildings), map (HWY Facility, Metro Highway Map, Guidance Display, VICS Public, VICS Highway), alignment, 3D Map Rotation, show points of interest, list points of interest)
- Route (e.g. detour (0.5 to 10 km), recalculate, different route (recommended, toll road, public roads, short route, other), route summary (duration, distance, etc.), route information (map view, route browser, etc.), learn route)
- Route guidance (points of interest not available)
- Save (memory point, address book)
- Destination (destination entry, stopover, delete, etc.)
- Repeat (voice output of last message)
)"TEL" basic function
The "TEL" basic function can be called by pressing the "TEL" function key and allows operation of the vehicle telephone system. When the "TEL" basic function is called, the corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the Audio/COMAND display:
- Name of currently connected mobile phone
- Field strength of mobile telephone network
- Handset symbol
- Speller with characters for entering telephone numbers
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
Incoming calls are signaled visually on the Audio/COMAND display as well as acoustically.
Control of the telephone system is described as follows:
- Searching and connecting Bluetooth® mobile phones
- Selection or settings via application bar
- Selection or settings via function bar
- "Private Mode"
- "Seamless Switch"
- Call switching control
Searching and connecting Bluetooth® mobile phones
Mobile phones unknown to the system can be activated with the basic function "Tel", in the "Telephone" menu item and the "Bluetooth telephone" submenu item.
A list of mobile phones already recognized is displayed. This is where you can select and authorize the desired mobile phone. The "Update" entry is used to search for new mobile phones.
After the update, it is possible to search and authorize the mobile phone to be connected from the displayed list. Only Bluetooth® phones are displayed. The transmission and reception volume can be set in the range of -2 to +2 by selecting the mobile phone displayed and then selecting the options or details.

The list of Bluetooth devices can be accessed by selecting the following menus on the Audio/COMAND display:
- "System"

- "Bluetooth"

Selection or settings via application bar
In the application bar, the following submenus can be called and various settings made:
- "Phone" menu
- "Address Book" menu
- "FM Multiplex" menu
The address book is not a temporary creation. The entries remain stored in the COMAND control unit when the mobile phone is removed and can still be dialed.
In the "FM Multiplex" submenu, information on earthquake warnings, tsunami warnings, stock exchanges and weather is displayed. While driving only trip-relevant information is displayed.
Selection or settings via function bar
In the function bar, the following submenus can be called and various settings made:
- "Phone" submenu

- "Own number"
- "Call lists" (received, dialed)
- "Address book" submenu

"Private Mode"
When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. To make a call in "Private Mode", one of the following processes must be completed:
- Up to 31.5.2012: disconnection of mobile phone from Japan electrical connector adapter cable (X39/46) during a telephone call in hands-free mode
- With a mobile phone connected with the COMAND controller unit via Bluetooth®: accepts a call in hands-free mode and then activates the "Private Mode" menu item via the Audio/COMAND control panel or establishes a call using the mobile phone buttons if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode" and "Private Mode" is activated.
With a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth®, the phone call is completed in "Private mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private mode" and "Private mode" is activated.
"Seamless Switch"
Up to 31.5.2010:
- A call that is in progress on the mobile phone can be continued if the phone is disconnected from the Japan electrical connector adapter cable
- A call that is in progress is forwarded to the COMAND controller unit if the mobile phone is connected with the Japan electrical connector adapter cable.
As of 1.6.2010
- An existing telephone conversation can be continued in hands-free mode (e.g. when getting into the vehicle) if the COMAND control unit is switched on and "Private Mode" is not activated on the mobile phone.
- An existing telephone conversation can be continued on the mobile phone if the COMAND control unit is switched off.
With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.
Call switching control
If another call is incoming during a telephone call, this is shown via the Audio/COMAND display. The telephone call can then be accepted or rejected.
If the incoming call is accepted, it becomes active and the existing call is terminated. If the incoming telephone is rejected, only the current telephone call is maintained.
The incoming telephone call can be accepted or rejected using the telephone buttons on the COMAND controller unit, the Audio/COMAND control panel, or the telephone call acceptance/termination button (S111s3) of the button group on the right side of the multifunction steering wheel.
"SYS" basic function
The "SYS" basic function can be called by pressing the "SYS" function key. The corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the audio/COMAND display:
- Symbol for "SYS" basic menu
- Application bar with corresponding main menus (top)
- Function bar with corresponding submenus (bottom)
The "SYS" basic function can also be selected in the application bar.
In the function bar, the following submenus can be called and various settings made:
- "System settings"
(Display (brightness, day design, night design, automatic), LINGUATRONIC (Help, "Echo Function"), GUI language selection, reading speed (fast, medium, slow), reversing camera (switch on with reverse gear, voice support, activate Bluetooth®), reset)
