Audio system, general 

The following components are available for control of the audio system:

IMPORTANT The Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) provides menu navigation.

The following basic functions can be controlled:

Basic function "RADIO" 

"RADIO" basic function can be called by pressing the "RADIO" function key. Pressing it several times enables you to switch between the following frequency bands:

When the "RADIO" basic function is called, the corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the Audio/COMAND display:

The following audio sources can be selected in the application bar:

IMPORTANT The various menu structures are made visible on the function bar depending on the audio source selected on the application bar.

In the function bar the following submenus can be called up depending on the frequency band selected in the application bar, and then various settings can be made:

)"DISC" basic function 

The "DISC" basic function can be called by pressing the "DISC" function key. The corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the audio/COMAND display (readable data carrier inserted):

IMPORTANT The various menu structures are made visible on the function bar depending on the audio source selected on the application bar.

When an audio CD/DVD is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:

A track in the track list can be selected with the control buttons on the radio or on the audio/COMAND control panel. The playback position can be changed by pushing and holding the audio/COMAND controller to the right (forward) or left (back).

When a MP3-CD/DVD is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:

When a memory card is inserted, the following submenus can be called in the function bar and various settings made:

If the "Music Register" data source is selected, the function bar can be used to call up the following submenus and enable various settings to be made:

When "Media interface" is selected as the data source, the following submenus can be selected in the function bar and various settings made.

"iPod" connected:

Video and TV 

The video and TV function can be displayed on the audio/COMAND control panel in the menu item Audio on the application bar on the audio/COMAND display The last video or TV application executed is started.

To start a different video or TV application, it is necessary to go back to the application bar and select the menu item Video.

The following video sources can be selected via the Video menu item:

Both the video sources TV and DVD video can be activated with the audio/COMAND control panel. The TV or DVD video image appears on the play field on the audio/COMAND display.

The following submenus can be selected using the function bar:

"NAVI" basic function 

The map and language data are preinstalled on the hard disk of the COMAND control unit. The card data can be updated by the customer or workshop by installing the data from an update DVD. Installation is also possible while driving.

After inserting the update DVD into the COMAND control unit, a prompt automatically appears asking whether the data is to be installed. After confirmation, installation is accomplished. If installation fails (e.g. due to dead vehicle battery (G1) or damaged DVD), operation can be continued with the old data. After installation, the DVD can be removed.

The "NAVI" basic function can be called by pressing the "NAVI" function key. The default screen appears on the Audio/COMAND display with the following information:

IMPORTANT Application bar and function bar are not shown on the Audio/COMAND display in the full-screen mode. The full-screen mode can be activated via the audio/COMAND control panel.

The navigation basic function can be operated as follows:

Selection and settings can be made with the buttons on the COMAND control unit, on the audio/COMAND control panel or by voice control in the VCS

)"TEL" basic function 

The "TEL" basic function can be called by pressing the "TEL" function key and allows operation of the vehicle telephone system. When the "TEL" basic function is called, the corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the Audio/COMAND display:

IMPORTANT Incoming calls are signaled visually on the Audio/COMAND display as well as acoustically.

Control of the telephone system is described as follows:

Searching and connecting Bluetooth® mobile phones 

Mobile phones unknown to the system can be activated with the basic function "Tel", in the "Telephone" menu item and the "Bluetooth telephone" submenu item.

A list of mobile phones already recognized is displayed. This is where you can select and authorize the desired mobile phone. The "Update" entry is used to search for new mobile phones.

After the update, it is possible to search and authorize the mobile phone to be connected from the displayed list. Only Bluetooth® phones are displayed. The transmission and reception volume can be set in the range of -2 to +2 by selecting the mobile phone displayed and then selecting the options or details.

In the application bar, the following submenus can be called and various settings made:

IMPORTANT The address book is not a temporary creation. The entries remain stored in the COMAND control unit when the mobile phone is removed and can still be dialed.

IMPORTANT In the "FM Multiplex" submenu, information on earthquake warnings, tsunami warnings, stock exchanges and weather is displayed. While driving only trip-relevant information is displayed.

Selection or settings via function bar 

In the function bar, the following submenus can be called and various settings made:

"Private Mode" 

When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. To make a call in "Private Mode", one of the following processes must be completed:

IMPORTANT With a mobile phone operated via Bluetooth®, the phone call is completed in "Private mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private mode" and "Private mode" is activated.

"Seamless Switch" 

Up to 31.5.2010:

IMPORTANT With some Japanese mobile phones you can select how the mobile phone behaves if a connection is interrupted. If the "Switch off if connection is interrupted" setting has been selected, "Seamless Switch" cannot be activated because a brief connection interruption occurs.

Call switching control 

If another call is incoming during a telephone call, this is shown via the Audio/COMAND display. The telephone call can then be accepted or rejected.

If the incoming call is accepted, it becomes active and the existing call is terminated. If the incoming telephone is rejected, only the current telephone call is maintained.

The incoming telephone call can be accepted or rejected using the telephone buttons on the COMAND controller unit, the Audio/COMAND control panel, or the telephone call acceptance/termination button (S111s3) of the button group on the right side of the multifunction steering wheel.

"SYS" basic function 

The "SYS" basic function can be called by pressing the "SYS" function key. The corresponding basic mask appears. The following information appears on the audio/COMAND display:
