Location
The telematics services communications module is located behind the rear seats on the major assembly carrier.
Tasks
The telematics services communications module establishes the connection to the service provider and controls the functions connected to the telematics services in the vehicle.
Depending on the vehicle equipment, the telematics services communications module is responsible for the following tasks:

Tasks of telematics services communications module with CODE 350 (eCall Europe emergency call system)
In the emergency call system (with CODE 350 (eCall Europe emergency call system)), the telematics services communications module has the following tasks:
- Self test
- Prioritization of the services in the internal arithmetic unit
- Receiving and transmitting operating, status and control signals from and to the emergency call system button (S93/3) (input and output)
- Establishing a voice or data link to the service provider via the emergency call system antenna (input and output)
- Transmission of a muting signal to the sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with CODE 810 (Sound System)) or the audio equipment (except CODE 810 (Sound System)) (output)
- Receiving the microphone signals from the audio equipment (input) during hands-free mode
- Sending audio signals in hands-free mode to the center instrument panel speaker (H4/27) (output)
- Receiving GPS data (Global Positioning System) for position finding from the multifunction antenna (A28/11) (except CODE 357 (Map navigation), except CODE 522 (Audio 20 radio) and except CODE 531 (COMAND APS)) (input)
- CAN communication via the diagnostic CAN (CAN D) with the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1)
In the emergency call system (with CODE 350 (Ecall Europe emergency call system)), the telematics services communications module can receive, e.g. the following CAN signals over the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module:
- Status of "circuit 15 R" from the electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) as a trigger signal for the self-test of the emergency call system
- Cyclic standby signal ("vital sign") of the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10) as a check signal
- Crash signal from supplemental restraint system control unit as trigger signal for the automatic emergency call
- "Central locking emergency opening" signal from the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module as a redundant trigger signal for the automatic emergency call
- Control signals of the button groups on the multifunction steering wheel from the instrument cluster (A1) (e.g. volume control, muting, establish or disconnect connection)
- Signals of the steering angle sensor (N49) from the steering column tube module control unit (N80), for position finding
- Wheel speed signals from the Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) (except CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) or the Premium Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/7) (with CODE 233 (DISTRONIC PLUS)) for position finding
- Position data from the audio equipment (with CODE 357 (Map navigation), with CODE 522 (Audio 20 radio) or with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)), for position finding
The telematics services communications module can send, e.g. the following CAN signals in the emergency call system (with CODE 350 (eCall Europe emergency call system)):
- Display messages for display on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8) to the audio equipment
Tasks of the telematics services communications module with CODE B54 (Live Traffic Information)
During navigation with real-time traffic data (with CODE B54 (Live Traffic Information)), the telematics services communications module has the following tasks:
- Via the emergency call system antenna (A2/52), the telematics services communications module receives real-time traffic data from the service provider and forwards it via a USB (Universal Serial Bus) connection to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3) (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)).
- The telematics services communications module receives position data from the COMAND controller unit via a USB connection and sends it to the service provider via the emergency call system antenna.
Variants
The telematics services communications module is installed in the following variants:
- In vehicles up to 01.03.2015 the telematics services communications module does not have an antenna output for receiving GPS signals.
- In vehicles as of 02.03.2015 except CODE B54 (Live Traffic Information), the telematics services communications module does not have a USB connection to the audio equipment.
