Tasks

The COMAND controller unit fulfills the following tasks:

Central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle

The COMAND controller unit provides the user with a structured and uniform user interface for the following system components:

IMPORTANT The user interface is shown on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).

IMPORTANT Using the "Vehicle functions" menu, equipment-dependent contents and functions of additional systems (e.g. climate control, seat adjustments) can be shown and controlled on the Audio/COMAND display.

Reading in of input signals as well as actuation of output media and system components

The COMAND controller unit sends and receives signals via the following connections:

CAN

The COMAND controller unit is a subscriber of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the interior CAN (CAN B):

Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

The COMAND controller unit exchanges data over MOST with the following control units:

Ethernet

The COMAND controller unit is connected to the diagnostic connector (X11/4) via the Ethernet.

Direct line

The COMAND controller unit has the following direct connections:

Integration of smartphones

The COMAND controller unit allows for the integration of smartphones. In order to ensure that the content is prepared in a vehicle-related way, only smartphone apps that have been developed for the following integration standards are supported:

In order to use the smartphone apps, the smartphone has to be connected to the USB connector 1 (A90/5x1) of the multimedia connection unit and the integration standard selected through a menu.

IMPORTANT In the integration standards MirrorLink 1.1 and Android Auto, along with the connection through USB (Universal Serial Bus) a Bluetooth® connection is also required between the smartphone and COMAND controller unit. The Bluetooth® connection is established automatically. If a smartphone is connected and an integration standard is activated, the COMAND controller unit is switched to a special operating mode ("Integration mode"), in which not all the COMAND controller unit functions can be used. The COMAND controller unit has the following restrictions in use when in Integration mode:

The "Radio" (AM and FM) and "Vehicle settings" functions and safety-relevant functions such as, e.g. the emergency call function (with CODE 494 (USA version) or with CODE 350 (Ecall Europe emergency call system)) or the breakdown assistance (with CODE 494 (USA version) or with CODE 06U (Communications module for using Mercedes connect me services)), can definitely still be used.

IMPORTANT No smartphone applications are shown in the instrument cluster.

IMPORTANT If the smartphone is being used to make a call, the COMAND controller unit receives and sends the telephone signals from and to the smartphone with Android Auto and MirrorLink 1.1 over the Bluetooth® antenna (A2/91), with CarPlay over the USB connection to the multimedia connection unit.

Body

The following components are integrated in the COMAND controller unit:

Function

DVD drive

With the aid of the integrated DVD drive, audio CDs, DVDs or video DVDs can be played, and data (e.g. updates) from a navigation DVD can be stored on the internal hard disk.

Navigation and GPS control unit

The navigation processor is integrated into the COMAND controller unit and calculates the location of the vehicle using the incoming antenna signals. It also calculates the vehicle's route after the destination has been entered.

Gyro sensor and 3D acceleration sensor

The gyrosensor and the 3D acceleration sensor are used to determine vehicle direction changes. They are installed in the navigation processor. Calibration is not required.

Control unit for voice control system (VCS [SBS])

The COMAND controller unit processes the voice commands, evaluates them and creates the voice output for the dialog with the user.
