Audio/COMAND operating instructions, general 

This description attempts to present the operation of the full functional scope for the audio equipment while taking all the vehicle's standard and special equipment, as known at the copy deadline, into account. National-specific and equipment-specific deviations hereto are possible. The vehicle is equipped with digital operating instructions, which can be called up on the driver information system.

Digital operating instructions: The language for the operating instructions can be selected. Content can be called up through the table of contents, a visual search on the vehicle or using a keyword. In vehicles with CODE 531 (COMAND APS) the digital operator's manual also provides animations.

The functions and menu navigation of the driver information system are shown on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8). The driver information system can be operated with the following controls:

• Buttons on audio equipment 
• Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) 
• Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) 
• Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)) 

The COMAND controller unit allows for the integration of smartphones. This means that the smartphone applications (Apps) in the vehicle can be used and shown on the Audio/COMAND display, which was developed for the following integration standards:

• Android Auto (Google)
• CarPlay (Apple)
• MirrorLink 1.1 (Car Connectivity Consortium)

The vehicle-related preparation of the contents is safeguarded by the integration standards.

If the smartphone is used, the COMAND controller unit is switched into a special operating mode ("Integration mode"), in which the functions of the driver information system can only be used to a limited extent. The following functions of the driver information system are not available if smartphone integration is active:

• Android Auto and CarPlay: The media player, telephony and the navigation of the COMAND controller unit cannot be used when in the Integration mode.
• MirrorLink 1.1: Telephoning via the COMAND controller unit is not possible when in the Integration mode (the Internet browser in the COMAND controller unit can however also be used, as can the media player and the navigation)

The "radio", "vehicle settings" and safety relevant functions such as, e.g. emergency call function (with code 494 (USA version) or with code 350 (Ecall Europe emergency call system)), can still be used.

In order to use the smartphone apps, the smartphone is connected to the USB connector 2 (A90/5x1) of the multimedia connection unit (A90/5) and the integration standard selected through a menu.

In the integration standards MirrorLink 1.1 and Android Auto, along with the connection through USB (Universal Serial Bus) a Bluetooth® connection is also required between the smartphone and COMAND controller unit. The Bluetooth® connection is established automatically.

The smartphone apps are operated using the Audio/COMAND control panel.

Individual control functions can also be activated using the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group, e.g. volume control or Accept/Terminate phone call or using the buttons on the COMAND controller unit, e.g. mute function or dialing through the numeric keys of the 12-key keypad on the right.

If voice control is implemented in the smartphone application, the app can also be operated using voice input, which is received by the voice control system via the hands-free system of the vehicle.

Buttons on audio equipment 

The audio equipment provides the following controls:

• Buttons in the center on the front of the device: "ON" button for switching on and for volume control, left and right station search button, button for disk drive, "CLEAR" button for deleting entries
• Left button group for calling up menus
• 12-key keypad, right

Audio/COMAND control panel 

The Audio/COMAND control panel is located on the center console. As the central control, the Audio/COMAND control panel contains the Audio/COMAND controller (A40/9s11), which makes navigation in menus and lists, selection of display-generated buttons (Softkeys) and entry of characters possible by means of tilting, rotating and pressing. Other buttons help to navigate in the menus.

On vehicles with manual transmission (except CODE 279 (Electronic gear selector)) the following buttons are integrated into the Audio/COMAND control panel:

• "Back" button (A40/9s2)
• Right free programming button (A40/9s10-2)

On vehicles with automatic transmission (except CODE 279 (Electronic gear selector)) the following buttons are integrated into the Audio/COMAND control panel:

• "Back" button
• "Delete" button (A40/9s12)
• Left free programming button (A40/9s10-1)
• Display OFF button (A40/9s17)

Left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group 

The multifunction steering wheel button groups are located on the multifunction steering wheel and can be used by the driver to operate the functions of the driver information system without removing his/her hands from the steering wheel. User guidance is performed on the instrument cluster (A1).

Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (with CODE 531 (COMAND APS)) 

The VCS is switched-on on the right multifunction steering wheel button group and switched off on the left multifunction steering wheel button group. When the voice control system is switched on, many driver information system functions can be operated using voice commands in dialog with the VCS [SBS]. The system can be operated by spelling out or entering complete words.
