Function requirements, general 

Mobile telephone system, general 

The mobile phone system is a constituent of the audio system.

A distinction is made between the following variants of the mobile phone system:

Both variants use Bluetooth technology for data transfer. The mobile phone used must support the hands-free profile (HFP) 1.0 or 1.5. The mobile phones that fulfill these requirements are listed at www.mercedes-benz.com/connect.

If several Bluetooth-compatible mobile phones are located in the vehicle, then the connection is established with the last mobile phone used in the vehicle. If this is not in the vehicle, then a search is made for a mobile phone used previous to this.

IMPORTANT Finding and connecting Bluetooth mobile telephones: Mobile telephones not registered with the system can be activated with the basic function "Tel" in the menu item "Telephone" and submenu item "Bluetooth telephones". A list of mobile phones already recognized is displayed. This list can be used to select and authorize the required mobile phone. The "Update" entry is used to search for new mobile phones. After the update, it is possible to search and authorize the mobile phone to be connected from the displayed list.

IMPORTANT The system is described using the comfort telephony as an example. Differences from the basic telephony are marked by the symbol IMPORTANT .

The following components are available for operating the mobile phone system:

After the call has been established, the mobile phone receives or transmits the mobile phone signals via the following route:

IMPORTANT With basic telephony, the mobile phone receives the call signal and sends it over the Bluetooth antenna to the audio equipment.

The voice input in hands-free mode is recorded by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio equipment via a direct line.

The voice signals are then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

IMPORTANT For basic telephony communication takes place between the audio equipment and the mobile phone over the Bluetooth antenna.

The voice output (except "Private Mode") is emitted by the audio equipment over the vehicle's speaker system.

IMPORTANT More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" information.

The mobile phone system includes the following processes:

Switching on and off characteristics 

The mobile phone is automatically switched on when the audio equipment is switched on through a wake-up pulse. The audio equipment transmits the wake-up pulse to the cradle via a direct line and the Bluetooth module. The mobile phone is then supplied with power and switched on.

If configured on the mobile phone, the Personal Identification Number (PIN) is prompted (not with code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network in USA). The PIN prompt is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display and on the instrument cluster.

The signals that are required for this are transmitted by the audio equipment via the Low Voltage Differential Signal line to the Audio/COMAND display and over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster.

IMPORTANT Not all cradles support this switch on/off characteristic.

IMPORTANT For basic telephony the mobile phone is switched on and off using the mobile phone buttons and the PIN prompt is entered the same way.

Appropriate instructions can be found in the equipment manufacturer's operating instructions.

The following possibilities are available for PIN entry:

The control signals of the control buttons on the mobile phone and audio equipment are processed internally.

The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent over the telematics CAN to the audio equipment.

The voice signals from the VCS [SBS] are picked up by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio equipment over a direct line.

The control and voice signals are sent from the audio equipment to the mobile phone via the following route:

After checking and enabling (not with "CDMA network" in the USA), the mobile phone registers itself in the service provider's mobile telephone network via the following route:

As soon as the mobile phone has logged into the service provider's mobile telephone network, the name of the mobile telephone network (Economic Commission for Europe (ECE)) or the information text "Ready" (USA) appears on the audio/COMAND display. The mobile phone signals are received the opposite way.

The signals that are required for displaying on the audio/COMAND display are provided via the following route:

Establishing call and terminating call 

The establish call and terminate call function consists of the following subfunctions:

Establish and terminate telephone call using control buttons on the mobile phone 

The telephone number is selected using the buttons on the mobile phone or from the mobile phone's phone book. The "Accept phone call" button is pressed. The phone call is then established in hands-free mode or in private mode, depending on the model.

Pressing the "HANG UP" button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call (also in hands-free mode). When a telephone call is terminated using the mobile phone buttons, the mobile phone interrupts the transmission or reception of mobile phone signals or data.

The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally in the mobile phone.

Establish and terminate telephone call using control buttons on the audio equipment 

After dialing the telephone number using the telephone buttons on the audio equipment and pressing the "Accept phone call" button, the phone call is established in hands-free mode and terminated by pressing the "Hang-up" button.

The control signals from the telephone buttons on the audio equipment are processed internally and forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

Establish and terminate telephone call via Audio/COMAND control panel 

To enter the telephone number via the Audio/COMAND control panel, the "TEL" base function must be started. The "TEL" base function is called up by pressing the "TEL" function key on the audio equipment. The corresponding basic mask appears. In vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (528) COMAND with DVD changer, the "TEL" base function can also be called up via the "TEL" menu in the application bar.

The telephone number can be entered or selected as follows:

Activation of the "SEND" function on the Audio/COMAND display establishes the telephone call in hands-free mode. Selecting the "Terminate call" pictogram and then confirming it on the Audio/COMAND control panel ends the telephone call.

The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent over the telematics CAN to the audio equipment.

The audio equipment then forwards them to the mobile phone via the following route:

The relevant control signals are transmitted the audio equipment by the audio/COMAND control panel via the telematics CAN.

Establish and terminate telephone call via the multifunction steering wheel button groups 

The phone book or the address book can be selected by pressing the system selection button (S110s3) via the "Tel" menu in the instrument cluster. The name of the person to be called is selected by scrolling forward and back using the scroll forward/back button (S110s1).

The accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) can be used to establish the telephone call in hands-free mode.

IMPORTANT The data that is required for displaying in the instrument cluster are sent by the audio equipment over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster.

Pressing the button on the accept/terminate phone call button on the multifunction steering wheel terminates a phone call.

Establish call via VCS (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer, with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) 

The voice input via VCS [SBS] function is activated by pressing the voice control system ON button (S111s4). A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.

Now the telephone number can be spoken or selected from the phone book, the address book or the call list.

The control signal of the voice control system ON button is forwarded to the audio equipment via the following route:

The voice commands are registered by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio equipment over a direct line. The voice commands are then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

The voice control of the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) is used to establish the telephone call in the hands-free mode.

IMPORTANT For basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio equipment and the mobile phone over the Bluetooth antenna.

Accepting calls, rejecting calls and call waiting 

The user can set up a telephone connection for initiating or terminating a call to another person in the cellular telephone system or fixed-line network.

Incoming calls are indicated acoustically over the speaker system and visually in the Audio/COMAND display as well as on the instrument cluster.

The audio equipment actuates the Audio/COMAND display over the low voltage differential signaling line.

The data that is required for displaying in the instrument cluster are sent by the audio equipment over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster.

The mobile phone display shows information on the caller, which is forwarded by the mobile phone to the audio equipment via the following route:

The accept call and reject call function is made up of the following subfunctions:

D Call acceptance via VCS (with code (511) Audio 50 APS incl. DVD changer, with code (512) COMAND APS incl. DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) 

Call acceptance or rejection via the buttons on the mobile phone 

Pressing the "Accept call" button on the mobile phone serves to accept the call in hands-free mode. Pressing the "Hang up" control button on the mobile phone rejects the incoming phone call.

The control signals from the buttons on the mobile phone are processed internally.

Accept and reject call using the telephone keys or the keypad on the audio equipment 

Pressing the "Accept phone call" button on the audio equipment accepts the call in hands-free mode and pressing the "Hang-up" button on the audio equipment rejects the call. The control signals from the buttons on the audio equipment are processed internally and forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

Call acceptance or rejection via the Audio/COMAND control panel 

Selecting the "Accept call" field with the Audio/COMAND control panel accepts the call in the hands-free mode and selecting the "Reject call" function rejects the call. The control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel are forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the telematics CAN.

The control signals are then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

Call acceptance and rejection via the multifunction steering wheel button groups 

The call is accepted or rejected in hands-free mode by pressing the accept/terminate phone call button in the corresponding subfield.

The control signal from the accept/terminate phone call button is forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the following route:

The control signals are sent from the audio equipment to the mobile phone via the following route:

IMPORTANT For basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio equipment and the mobile phone over the Bluetooth antenna.

The instrument cluster shows information on the caller, if the "Tel" menu was activated beforehand.

Call acceptance over the VCS (with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer, with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer, with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) 

Pressing the voice control system ON button of the right multifunction steering wheel button group activates the voice control of the VCS [SBS].

A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.

The control signal of the voice control system ON button is forwarded to the audio equipment via the following route:

The call is only accepted with the corresponding voice command.

The voice commands are registered by the hands-free system microphone and forwarded to the audio equipment over a direct line. The voice commands are then forwarded to the mobile phone via the following route:

IMPORTANT For basic telephony, communication takes place between the audio equipment and the mobile phone over the Bluetooth antenna.

The individual voice commands are listed in the "Linguatronic operator's manual".

Call waiting 

If another call signal is received during a telephone call, this is shown on the Audio/COMAND display by the audio equipment over an LVDS line. The telephone call can now be accepted or rejected via the buttons on the mobile phone.

If the incoming call is accepted, it is activated in hands-free mode and the existing call is terminated. If the incoming call is rejected, the existing call remains active in hands-free mode.

The mobile phone button control signals are processed internally and forwarded as follows to the audio equipment:

Telephone book 

Telephone book entries stored in the audio equipment are managed in the telephone book. In addition, the telephone book entries can be loaded into the telephone book in the audio device (external data), whereby they are available permanently when the mobile phone is no longer in the vehicle. External telephone book entries can be deleted separately. A telephone connection can be established directly from the telephone book entry.

The phone book is called up as follows:

The telephone book entries are displayed in the Audio/COMAND display. Navigation in the phone book occurs via the Audio/COMAND control panel.

The first entry in the phone book is that for Mercedes-Benz service center "MB Contact" (except code (494) USA version and without code (498) Japan version).

IMPORTANT Vehicles with basic telephony: If the mobile phone supports the Bluetooth profile "Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP)", entries can be saved using the "Import contacts" function in the phone book.

If this is not the case, they must be transmitted with the function "Receive calling cards"

Access to the telephone book in the mobile phone is read only.

Address book (in vehicles with navigation (with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio or code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer) 

On vehicles with navigation, the address data in the telephone book entries can also be managed in the address book. All names with telephone numbers in the address book entries stored can be displayed. If an address book entry does not have telephone number, it does not appear in the telephone book,

The address entries stored in the "audio equipment" and the data loaded from the mobile phone's phone book are displayed in the address book. 

Data can also be transferred from other external devices (e.g. personal digital assistant (PDA), laptop) into the address book via the Bluetooth interface of the mobile phone and the Bluetooth antenna.

These are then permanently available as an entry. The address-relevant applications for telephony can be started directly via the entries and provided with the data stored.

Call up address book: 

Vehicles with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio or code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer:

Vehicles with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer:

If the "Address book" submenu was selected before the audio equipment was switched off, this is called up immediately when the "Tel" menu is selected in the application bar.

Navigation in the address book is possible on the audio/COMAND control panel.

Entries in the address book can contain the following information:

On vehicles with voice control system (with code (511) Audio 50 APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer), it is possible to provide 50 entries with voice commands.

The address entries can be deleted according to type:

If the driver has activated the VCS, he/she can issue voice commands by spelling out words or by pronouncing complete words. The voice commands are picked up by the hands-free system microphone, which is connected via a direct line to the audio equipment. The audio equipment processes the signals internally and implements them accordingly.

IMPORTANT Voice recognition by the processor integrated into the audio equipment requires the driver's voice to undergo teach-in beforehand.

If the driver's voice or the message of the voice command cannot be uniquely identified, the VCS [SBS] issues a query.

Short Message Service (SMS) (with code (386) Comfort telephony) 

The SMS application enables the user to manage his/her SMS messages (e.g. to read or delete them). For this, the SMS messages previously received on the mobile phone as well as the new SMS messages are forwarded to the "audio equipment". The following SMS functions are possible:

The SMS function consists of the following subfunctions:

D Load existing SMS onto audio equipment 

D Receive SMS message 

D Call up the SMS application 

D Display SMS message 

D Compose and send SMS message 

D Read out SMS message 

Load existing SMS onto audio equipment 

The SMS already stored in the mobile phone are transmitted from the mobile phone to the "audio control unit" in the following way:

IMPORTANT Under certain circumstances, loading SMS messages may take a long time. This may be because of the mobile phone or the number of SMS messages in the mobile phone.

Receive SMS message 

The SMS messages received by the mobile phone are sent as follows to the audio equipment:

Call up the SMS application 

The SMS function for managing (e.g. reading or deleting) SMS messages is called up using the "Tel" basic function.

The "TEL" base function is called up by pressing the "TEL" function key on the audio equipment. The corresponding basic mask appears. On vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) the basic "TEL" function can also be called up using the "TEL" menu in the application bar. The "SMS" submenu can then be called up on the function bar.

The "TEL" function key control signals are processed internally by the audio equipment. The Audio/COMAND control panel control signals are sent over the telematics CAN to the audio equipment. The Audio/COMAND display is actuated by the audio equipment over the low voltage differential signaling line.

Display SMS message 

The SMS content is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display. The audio equipment actuates the Audio/COMAND display over the low voltage differential signaling line.

Composing and sending SMS messages 

SMS messages can only be read and transmitted using the control buttons on the mobile phone. The control signals from the mobile phone's control buttons are processed internally.

Reading out SMS message 

SMS voice output is conducted over the vehicle speaker system.

Mercedes-Benz Contact function (except code (494) USA version and except code (498) Japan version) 

The Mercedes-Benz Contact function provides user-friendly access to services rendered by Mercedes-Benz Services by means of a permanently reserved phone book entry in the audio equipment's phone book. Mercedes-Benz Contact provides assistance in any matters concerning the vehicle or a breakdown. The function enables a call to be established to the Mercedes-Benz customer center. All the important vehicle data such as the vehicle identification number, kilometer reading, vehicle position is transmitted in this case to ensure the best possible customer care.

The Mercedes-Benz Contact function is available in the following countries:

The "Mercedes-Benz Contact" function uses the hands-free system (via Bluetooth) and supports the service acceptance process at the Mercedes Benz Service Center by voice communication with synchronous transfer of the vehicle data.

By selecting the "MB Contact" entry in the telephone book a telephone connection is made to the Mercedes-Benz Service Center. The phone book is activated by starting the "TEL" base function. The "TEL" base function is called up by pressing the "TEL" function key on the audio equipment. When the "TEL" basic function is called, the corresponding basic mask appears.

The following information appears on the Audio/COMAND display:

On vehicles with code (512) COMAND APS with DVD changer or code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation), the "TEL" base function can also be called up on the application bar.

Selecting the "Name" submenu opens the phone book. The "MB Contact" entry can now be accessed.

The phone book can also be selected by pressing the system selection button through the "Tel" menu in the instrument cluster. The name of the person to be called is selected using the Scroll forward and Scroll back buttons. Pressing the right button on the accept/terminate phone call button sets up a phone call.

The "MB Contact" entry can be selected using the following control components:

The voice input via VCS function is activated by pressing the voice control system ON button. A signal tone is emitted after the voice control system has been activated.

As soon as the VCS is activated, the telephone book can be called up and then selected using the "MB Contact" entry.

The phone call with the Mercedes-Benz customer center employee can be terminated as follows:

Pressing the "Hang up" control button on the mobile phone terminates the telephone call. The control signal of the "Hang up" control button is processed internally by the mobile phone.

Pressing the "Hang up" control button on the audio equipment terminates the telephone call. The control signal of the "Hang up" control button is processed internally by the audio equipment.

Selecting the "Terminate call" pictogram and then confirming it on the Audio/COMAND control panel ends the telephone call. The relevant control signals are transmitted the audio equipment by the audio/COMAND control panel via the telematics CAN. The audio equipment routes this to the mobile phone.

Pressing the button on the accept/terminate phone call button on the multifunction steering wheel in the left subfield terminates a phone call. The control signal from the accept/terminate phone call button is forwarded to the audio equipment over the following route

"Seamless Switch" 

"Seamless Switch" provides the following functionality:

"Private Mode" 

When in "Private mode", the user can make a telephone call without other vehicle occupants being able to hear the conversation. When dialing using the buttons on the mobile phone, the telephone call is carried out in "Private Mode" if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode" and "Private Mode" has been activated.

After a telephone call has been accepted or established in hands-free mode, you can switch to "Private Mode" by activating "Private Mode" via the mobile phone if the mobile phone supports "Private Mode".
