Location 

The radio is centrally located in the instrument panel.

Central control unit for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle 

The radio provides the user with a structured and standard user interface for the following system components:

• Audio system (e.g. "Radio", "CD" (as well as MP3) and further multimedia devices)
• Telephony (with telephone book function)
• Internet
• - sound settings (e.g. "bass", "treble", "fader", "balance")
• System settings (e.g. "Brightness" and "Contrast" of the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8))
• Navigation (with CODE 522 (Audio 20 radio) and CODE 357 (Map navigation))

The user interface is shown on the Audio/COMAND display. The navigation functions (with CODE 357 (Map navigation)) can be used via a voice control system integrated into the navigation system.

The "Vehicle functions" menu can be used to display and control equipment-specific content and functions of additional systems (e.g. climate control, seat adjustments) on the Audio/COMAND display.

Reading in of input signals as well as actuation of output media and system components 

The radio sends and receives signals via the following connections:

• CAN 
• Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) 
• Ethernet

CAN 

The radio is a subscriber of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and the interior CAN (CAN B):

• Via the telematics CAN, the radio receives control signals from the Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) for example.
• Via the telematics CAN, the radio sends control signals to the Audio/COMAND display for example. Via the interior CAN, the radio receives the signals of the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111) from the instrument cluster (A1), for example.
• Via interior CAN, the radio sends navigation displays to the instrument cluster for example.

Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) 

The radio exchanges data with the following control units over MOST:

• Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with CODE 810 (Sound system))
• Tuner unit (A90/4) (with CODE 536 (SIRIUS satellite radio) or with CODE 537 (Digital radio (DAB)))

Ethernet 

The radio is connected to the diagnostic connector (X11/4) via the Ethernet.
