The radio provides the user with a structured and uniform user interface that is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).

The input factors are read in via the following connections:

- Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer))
Direct line
The following signals are read in via a direct line:
- Circuit 30g and circuit 31
- Wake-up for MOST (bi-directional)
- Bluetooth antenna (A2/91) (as of 1.6.12 also for Bluetooth® audio)
- Hands-free system microphone (A67b1)
- Rear window antenna FM antenna amplifier (A2/19) and FM, AM and CL [ZV] antenna amplifier (A2/18) (model 207.3)
- TV 3 FM2 and DAB band III antenna amplifier (A2/54) and FM, AM and CL [ZV] antenna amplifier (A2/55) (model 207.4)
- AUX connection electrical connector (X39/45) (up to 9.5.13, without CODE 518 (Media Interface)), location up to 31.5.11 in glove compartment and as of 1. 6.11 in stowage compartment (telephone compartment) beneath the armrest, for external audio equipment
- USB electrical connection (X115) (as of 1.6.12)

CAN
The radio is a subscriber of the interior CAN (CAN B) and the telematics CAN (CAN A).
Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer))
The radio receives control and audio signals from the following control units via the MOST:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with CODE 810 (Sound system))
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with CODE 537 (Digital radio))
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with CODE 518 (Media interface))
Evaluation of input factors
The input values are processed in the radio.
Activation of output media and system components
The following output signals are output by the radio to actuate the system components:
- Audio output (speaker system) (except CODE 810 (Sound system))
- Switching voltage for telephony to Bluetooth module (A34/7) or to mobile phone contact plate (X237/1) (as of 10.5.13) (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephony) or with CODE 379 (Telephone module with Bluetooth SAP))
- Provision of a structured and uniform user interface for the following system components:
- Audio system (e.g. "Radio", "CD" (also MP3), "AUX")
- Telephony (with telephone book function)
- - sound settings (e.g. "bass", "treble", "fader", "balance")
- - System settings (e.g. "brightness" and "contrast" of the audio/COMAND display)

Function
The status of the buttons of the radio button group is read in and made available to the central computer. The button operations undergo further processing in the central computer and are forwarded via MOST (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer)), telematics CAN or interior CAN to the other system components in the form of messages. If the "ON" button on the radio is pressed, the radio switches on. The volume is regulated by turning the "ON" button. The buttons in the left button group switch over to the audio source desired by the user.
Variants
The following radio variants are available:
- Audio 20 radio with single CD drive (with CODE 523 (MB Audio 20 radio)), as of 1.6.12 or up to 31.5.12
- Audio 20 radio with CD changer (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer)), as of 1.6.12 or up to 31.5.12
CD drive:
The integrated CD drive can be used to play audio CDs (including in MP3 format).
Diagnosis
The radio (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer)) is the diagnosis gateway for all MOST subscribers. Diagnostic communication takes place between the radio and the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the interior CAN. Diagnostic communication between the front SAM control unit and the diagnostic connector (X11/4) occurs via diagnostic CAN (CAN D).
