REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A
NOTES Notes on handling, transport and storage of ceramic brake disks   AH42.10-P-9406-13A
NOTES Brake fluid notes   AH42.50-P-0001-01A

1 Unscrew the cap on the brake fluid expansion reservoir and suction off some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the expansion reservoir overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
2 Detach rear complete wheels    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 204 AP40.10-P-4050CW
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 212, 218
Turn if necessary.

INSPECT Check     
3 Check condition of brake disks (61)    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 204 AP42.10-P-4258CW
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 212, 218 except CODE B07 (Ceramic high-performance compound brake system) AP42.10-P-4258EW 
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 212, 218 with CODE B07 (AMG ceramic high-performance compound brake system)
IMPORTANT Replace the brake disks (61) as a complete set only.

4 Check brake lining thickness    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE   AP42.10-P-4253A 
NOTES
Make sure that the brake linings (43) are not worn beyond the wear limit.
Otherwise the bar between the sealing groove and the dust cap may be damaged.
IMPORTANT Replace brake linings (43) as a complete set only.
↓
Check brake system for leaks using pressure tester:

MODEL 212, 218 AR42.10-P-0015EW 
  Only perform operation steps 5 to 11 when removing/installing the brake linings (43)     
5 Disconnect electrical connector of right rear brake wear sensor (S10/4x1)    
IMPORTANT Notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors   AH42.10-P-0003-01CW
    IMPORTANT Only fitted on the right-hand side.  
6 Drive out retaining pins (41) using punch and remove retaining spring (31d) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Hammer in retaining pins (41) as far as the end stop. Ensure that retaining spring (31d) is correctly seated.
IMPORTANT Replace retaining pins (41) if necessary.
 
7 Pull brake linings (43) out of brake caliper (31) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not apply brake pastes or lubricants to brake linings (43) and brake calipers (31)!
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only sets of brake linings approved by Mercedes-Benz (43) may be installed.
IMPORTANT Dispose of brake pads (43) as special waste. The local authorities can provide information regarding whether disposal is also permitted as industrial waste similar to domestic waste.
 
8 Press back brake piston using resetting device IMPORTANT Secure remaining brake pistons to prevent them slipping out.
IMPORTANT If the brake pistons are sluggish replace brake caliper (31).

INSPECT Check     
9 Check brake caliper (31) for leaks and dust boot for damage MODEL 204 AR42.10-P-0015CW

IMPORTANT If necessary replace dust boot or brake caliper (31).

  Cleaning     
10 Clean contact surfaces of brake linings (43) on brake caliper (31) NOTES
Do not use sharp-edged or pointed tools to clean.
Otherwise damage may occur.
 
Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
11 Pull brake wear sensor (S10/4) out of pad backing plate of brake lining (43) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace the defective brake wear sensor (S10/4).
IMPORTANT Only fitted on the right-hand side.
 
  Only carry out steps 12 to 16 when removing/installing the brake caliper (31)     
12 Detach brake hose (51) from brake caliper (31) MODEL 204 AR42.10-P-0013CW
MODEL 212, 218
NOTES
Seal connections immediately.
Damage can otherwise be caused by escaping brake fluid.

13 Remove bolt (31e) for electrical connector (S10/4x1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace bolt (31e).
IMPORTANT Only fitted on the right-hand side.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, brake wear sensor to brake caliper *BA42.10-P-1003-12J 
14 Remove bolts (35) from wheel carrier and remove brake caliper (31) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new bolts (35).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Screw/bolt, brake caliper to hub/rotor assembly *BA42.10-P-1001-12J 
15 Bleed brake system MODEL 204 AR42.10-P-0010CW
MODEL 212, 218 AR42.10-P-0010EW 
16 Check brake system for leaks   AR42.10-P-0100-01V
  Only perform operation steps 17 to 23 when removing/installing the brake disks (61)     
17 Release parking brake    
18 Turn back brake adjuster for parking brake MODEL 204 AR42.20-P-0540CW
MODEL 212, 218
NOTES
Make sure that the brake adjuster for the parking brake is turned back.
The brake shoes will otherwise be damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Adjust parking brake.

19 Remove bolts (35) from wheel carrier and remove brake caliper (31) NOTES
Do not detach brake hose (51), instead attach brake caliper (31) to vehicle so that it is free of tension. Do not kink the brake hose (51) or subject it to tensile loads.
Otherwise the brake hose (51) and/or the paint on the brake caliper (31) will be damaged.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new bolts (35).
 
20 Remove locking bolts (64) and detach brake disks (61) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Install new locking bolts (64).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Observe the marking on the installation side (M)!
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Safety screw, rear axle brake disk to wheel flange *BA42.10-P-1001-06H 
CLEAN Clean     
21 Clean contact surfaces and snug fits of brake disks (61)    
22 Grease snug fits of brake disks (61) lightly Paste, hot lubrication 1 kg, DBL 6879.20 *BR00.45-Z-1005-06A 
INSPECT Check     
23 Check condition of brake shoes of parking brake If necessary replace brake shoes of parking brake
↓
Remove/install the brake shoes of the parking brake:
 
MODEL 204 AR42.20-P-0530CW
MODEL 212, 218 AR42.20-P-0530EW 
24 Install in the reverse order    
DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
25 Depress brake pedal several times until brake linings (43) lie against brake disks (61) IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
INSPECT Check     
26 Check fluid level in brake fluid reservoir, and correct if necessary    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4210EW 
27 Carry out brake test on the test stand    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.00-P-4290BA
