Standard on all 4MATIC models in model series 203, 211 and 220 the Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
as basic equipment.
Integrated into it is the electronic traction system (ETS) which has been specially modified for the 4MATIC drive. This system replaces the mechanical interaxle-differential lock and axle-differential lock on traditional 4MATIC systems.
The functionality and safety comply with the standard variant.

The electronic traction system (ETS)
is the traction controller in the Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
. Because of the fixed drive-torque distribution of 40 % to the front axle and 60 % to the rear axle, the 4MATIC has an outstanding traction potential. However, if one or more wheels starts to spin on a smooth underground, the electronic traction system (ETS)
then intervenes.
The required brake pressure is automatically built up at each spinning wheel to reduce the excessive wheel speed. At the same time the resulting locking differential effect transfers an additional drive torque to the wheels that are not spinning.
The driver is notified by a flashing warning lamp in the instrument cluster that one or more wheels are starting to slip. In this event, the driving style should be adapted to meet the road surface conditions.
Pressing the ESP Off button switches off the stability control. Here, the electronic traction system (ETS)
remains operational however. The switched off stability control is notified to the driver by means of a permanently on warning lamp in the instrument cluster.
