Location

One front actuation module, LED 1 exterior lighting each is located at the side on the left front lamp unit and on the right front lamp unit.

IMPORTANT The actuation modules 1, LED exterior lighting are tightly screwed to the housing of the respective front lamp unit. The actuation modules 1, LED exterior lighting are connected with the vehicle-side wiring harness via the front lamp units.

Task

The front actuation modules, LED 1 exterior lighting are responsible for the following tasks:

The front actuation modules, LED 1 exterior lighting actuate the LEDs located in the front lamp unit to implement the individual light functions.

The LEDs are each connected in series.

The front actuation modules, LED 1 exterior lighting are powered by the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) (circuit 30L).

The individual light functions are output after applying control voltage at the respective input channel of the front actuation module 1, LED exterior lighting. This is done by the front SAM control unit for the standing, parking and turn signal light functions.

Actuation of the infrared light functions (with code (610) Night View Assist) is performed by the left headlamp control unit (E1n9) and the right headlamp control unit (E2n9).

A differentiation is made between the following versions of the front lamp units in accordance with the vehicle equipment:

Lamp units in xenon design:

The left front actuation module, LED 1 exterior lighting communicates over the left headlamp-LIN (LIN G1) with the left xenon light control unit (E1n1). The right front actuation module, LED 1 exterior lighting communicates over the right headlamp-LIN (LIN G2) with the right xenon light control unit (E2n1).

Lamp units in full LED design:

The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the areas actuated by the LEDs. The front actuation modules, LED 1 exterior lighting evaluate the signals from each of the four temperature sensors. If the LEDs or the plastic housings for the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of excessively high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the actuating currents of the LEDs are reduced, thereby lowering the heat development.

In order to additionally cool the LEDs or plastic housings of the front lamp units, the front actuation modules 1, LED exterior lighting actuate the following components:

The fan motors are actuated either immediately or in a time-delayed fashion, depending on the light function that is active.

The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.

The left front actuation module, LED 1 exterior lighting communicates over the left headlamp with the left headlamp control unit. The front right actuation module, LED 1 exterior lighting communicates over the right headlamp-LIN with the right headlamp control unit.

Identified malfunctions of individual components are stored in a nonvolatile memory. The actuation modules, LED 1 exterior lighting can be diagnosed through the corresponding xenon light control unit or headlamp control unit.

Variants

As of 01.09.2014 with code (631) Full LED headlamp (without ILS), daytime running lamps integrated in headlamp, for left-hand traffic or code (632) Full LED headlamp (without ILS), daytime running lamps integrated in headlamp, for right-hand traffic, shown on left front lamp unit (E1)

Location

One front actuation module, LED 2 exterior lighting each is located on the rear of the left front lamp unit and the rear of the right front lamp unit.

IMPORTANT The actuation modules 2, LED exterior lighting are tightly screwed to the housing of the respective front lamp unit. The actuation modules 1, LED exterior lighting are connected with the vehicle-side wiring harness via the front lamp units.

Task

The front actuation modules, LED 2 exterior lighting are responsible for the following tasks:

The front actuation modules, LED 2 exterior lighting actuate the LEDs located in the front lamp unit to implement the individual light functions.

The LEDs are each connected in series.

The front actuation modules 2, LED exterior lighting are powered by the front SAM control unit (circuit 30L).

The individual functions on vehicles up to 31.08.2014 with code (621) Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic) or code (622) Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic) are output after a control voltage is applied to the respective input channel of the front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting. This occurs through the front SAM control unit.

On vehicles as of 01.09.2014 with code (631) Full LED headlamp (without ILS), daytime running lamps integrated in headlamp, for left-hand traffic or code (632) Full LED headlamp (without ILS), daytime running lamps integrated in headlamp, for right-hand traffic, the left headlamp control unit sends the request to output the individual light functions via the left headlamp LIN to the left front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting and the right headlamp control unit via the right headlamp LIN to the right front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting.

The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the areas actuated by the LEDs. The front actuation modules, LED 2 exterior lighting evaluate the signals from each of the three temperature sensors. If the LEDs or the plastic housings for the front lamp units threaten to overheat as a consequence of excessively high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the actuating currents of the LEDs are reduced, thereby lowering the heat development.

In order to additionally cool the LEDs or plastic housings of the front lamp units, the front actuation modules 2, LED exterior lighting actuate the following components:

The fan motors are actuated either immediately or in a time-delayed fashion, depending on the light function that is active.

The active ventilation through actuation of the fan motors is used simultaneously for defrosting and de-icing the front lamp units at low outside temperatures.

The left front actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting communicates over the left headlamp LIN with the left headlamp control unit. The front right actuation module 2, LED exterior lighting communicates over the right headlamp LIN with the right headlamp control unit.

Identified malfunctions of individual components are stored in a nonvolatile memory. The front actuation modules, LED 2 exterior lighting can be diagnosed through the corresponding headlamp control unit.
