Pyrotechnic components in Mercedes-Benz vehicles
Pyrotechnic components used as occupant restraint systems contain a gas generator to generate a gas volume. This gas generator contains an explosive propellant charge which is electronically controlled by an ignition pill via a control unit (e.g. airbags, seat belt tensioners, actuators). The volume of gas generated in this way unfolds the airbag or tightens the belt strap in the millisecond range. With the active bonnet, the bonnet stand (actuator) lifts the bonnet at the rear.
The following pyrotechnic components can be installed in different designs and numbers (depending on the equipment):
- Driver airbag
- Front passenger airbag
- Sidebag
- Seat cushion airbag
- Windowbag
- Headbag
- Kneebag
- Pelvisbag (pelvic airbag)
- The belt tensioners with and without a beltbag
- The belt buckle tensioners
- The belt end fitting tensioner
- Pyrotechnic bonnet stand (actuator)
- Mechanical bonnet stand with pyrotechnic draw (not reversible)
- Pyro protection
- Release capsule hinge
- Release capsule roll bar
The installation of pyrotechnic components in the vehicle interior can also be indicated by the labeling "RS", "SRS", "Airbag". or combinations thereof. These are located on the component or in its effective and / or development area.
Notes on handling pyrotechnic components and their adjacent components in accident vehicles
- Pyrotechnic components must be checked for external damage and replaced if necessary.
In the event of an accident with a deployed driver airbag, the steering wheel and the jacket tube must always to be renewed. Triggering the driver's airbag can lead to externally undetectable damage to the steering wheel and jacket tube.
General information on handling pyrotechnic components and their adjacent components
- Carry out approved and published system tests on pyrotechnic components and their sensors only when they are installed and only with diagnostic systems approved for this, suitable for the respective series.
Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Defective or damaged pyrotechnic components, control units and their sensors must generally be replaced. A repair or other manipulation is not permitted on these components.
- Components that are connected to pyrotechnic components (e.g. instrument panel, door trim, glove compartment, seats, cable sets, belt straps, etc.) must always be checked for damage and replaced if necessary. Only technically approved component combinations are permitted. The vehicle documentation must be observed.
- If obvious errors, defects or the installation of non-approved accessories, retrofitting (s), or their incorrect installation (e.g. navigation device in the deployment area of the airbag, protective covers on seat without tear seam for the exit opening of the sidebag) in the vehicle, draw the customer's attention to this.
- New control units for pyrotechnic components, their commissioning or parameterization can only be carried out with approved diagnostic systems, suitable for the respective series. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- Recommendation for security reasons:
In the event of well-founded suspicion or if there are indications of a fake pyrotechnic component that appears untrustworthy in any other way, possibly of unknown origin, the superior must be informed. In this case, never install the pyrotechnic component in the vehicle.
Legal regulations on the handling and storage of pyrotechnic components
- All of the following statutory provisions apply to the Federal Republic of Germany. In other countries, the applicable legal regulations and provisions must be observed.
- Pyrotechnic components, as mentioned above, are pyrotechnic components of class P1 (old: T1). The handling, transport and storage of these components are subject to the "law for explosive substances".
- A pyrotechnic component must not be stored in the immediate vicinity of highly flammable or highly flammable and fire-causing substances.
- Acquisition, transport, storage, installation and removal as well as scrapping may only be carried out by trained personnel in compliance with the relevant safety regulations. Transport in the passenger compartment of a vehicle is strictly prohibited.
