General brake test (Only applies for countries without a specified brake test on the brake test stand)
1 Check braking behavior of service brake when driving NOTES
It must be ensured that the brake test when driving is performed as per the country-specific legislation and regulations.
Otherwise, people may be injured or there may be damage to material and the environment!
IMPORTANT Press brake pedal uniformly.
With braking deceleration fluctuations or pulsating brake pedal:

Determine and rectify cause subject to separate repair order.
With a difference in the service brake performance on the wheels on a single axle:

Check/correct tire pressure subject to separate repair order.
If the service brake performance difference remains even after repeat brake test on the wheels on a single axle:

Determine and rectify cause subject to separate repair order.
The locking limit was not reached:

Subject to a separate repair order, check whether the brake values still comply with the legal regulations.
The specified minimum requirements and tolerance limits for the brake system must be fulfilled on a vehicle-specific basis in accordance with the country-specific legislation. If this is not the case:

Repair any complaints subject to separate repair order after performing diagnosis with the appropriate findings.

2 Check braking characteristics for parking brake when driving at ≤4 km/h (≤2.5 mph) NOTES
It must be ensured that the brake test when driving is performed as per the country-specific legislation and regulations.
Otherwise, people may be injured or there may be damage to material and the environment!
IMPORTANT Electrically operated parking brakes are only active as from a speed of ≤4 km/h (≤2.5 mph).

Brake test on brake test stand
DANGER Risk of death  caused by limbs being caught or crushed by rotating parts when performing tests on the brake test stand Never leave the vehicle unattended on the rollers except in an emergency. Ensure that no one is under the vehicle or near rotating parts during testing. In case of emergency, use the EMERGENCY OFF switch to shut down test stand. AS42.00-Z-0001-01A

3.2 Switch on dynamometer test using steering wheel buttons MODEL 197
REFER TO TESTING & REPAIR MODEL 197.3/4
NOTES
Do not switch off ESP® using the ESP Sport Off button on the center console.
Otherwise an active brake intervention may result in the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) suffering measurement errors.

IMPORTANT Press brake pedal uniformly. The maximum value prior to the wheels locking up is to be documented.

8 Move vehicle with rear axle into roller brake test stand Roller brake test stand for passenger cars
9 Move automatic transmission to selector lever position "N" or shift manual transmission to neutral
10 Determine and document braking response and brake values of rear axle NOTES
With MODEL 164, 166, 251 the brake test for each axle must not last longer than ≈ 10 seconds.

Vehicles with electrically-operated parking brake
NOTES
Before operating the electric parking brake, the rear-axle wheel-and-tire assemblies must be driven for at least 10 s by the roller brake test stand so that application of the brake shoes is slowed up.
Otherwise damage may occur.

NOTES
Before operating the electric parking brake, the rear-axle wheel-and-tire assemblies must be driven for at least 10 s by the roller brake test stand so that application of the brake shoes is slowed up.
Otherwise damage may occur.
IMPORTANT The electric parking brake brakes briefly and then changes to the roller brake test stand mode.
  • After 2 to 5 s press the switch of the electric parking brake again briefly, the electric parking brake brakes with greater brake power.
  • If necessary, after 2 to 5 s briefly press the switch of the electric parking brake a 3rd and a 4th time until the wheels lockup.

IMPORTANT The maximum value prior to the wheels locking up is to be documented.

The locking limit was not reached:

Subject to a separate repair order, check whether the brake values still comply with the legal regulations.
IMPORTANT The stated deviation applies for the Federal Republic of Germany; differently phrased country-specific regulations must be observed accordingly.
