Location 

The headlamp control unit is located in the left of the engine compartment.

Task 

The headlamp control unit performs the following:

• Reading in of sensors and signals 
• Evaluation of input factors 
• Controlling functions 
• Actuation of components 

Reading in of sensors and signals 

The input factors are read in via the following connections:

• Direct line 
• LIN 
• Chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) 

Direct line 

The signals of the following components are read in by the headlamp control unit on vehicles except CODE 489 (AIRMATIC (air suspension with level adjustment and adaptive damping system ADS)) over direct lines:

• Right front level sensor (B22/9)
• Right rear level sensor (B22/10)

MODEL 166 up to model year 2016 with CODE 489 (AIRMATIC (air suspension with level adjustment and adaptive damping system (ADS))) with CODE 622 (Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic))

The AIRMATIC control unit (N51/3) sends the information on the vehicle level over the chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1), electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) and chassis CAN 2 to the headlamp control unit.

LIN 

The headlamp control unit reads in the diagnostic data for the following components over the LIN:

• Left headlamp LIN (LIN G1):
  • Left headlamp range adjustment actuator motor (E1m1)
  • Left active curve illumination actuator motor (E1m2)
  • Left light distribution actuator motor (E1m3)
  • Left xenon light power supply module (E1n4)
  • Left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting (E1n7)
• Right headlamp LIN (LIN G2):
  • Right headlamp range adjustment actuator motor (E2m1)
  • Right active curve illumination actuator motor (E2m2)
  • Right light distribution actuator motor (E2m3)
  • Right xenon light power supply module (E2n4)
  • Right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting (E2n7)

Chassis CAN 2 

The headlamp control unit also reads in the following signals over chassis CAN 2:

• Circuit status
• Wheel speeds
• Vehicle level (with CODE 489 (AIRMATIC (air suspension with level adjustment and adaptive damping system ADS)))
• Steering wheel angle
• Drive position
• Status of engine and drivetrain
• Switch position of combination switch (S4)
• Exterior lights requests from instrument cluster (A1) (menu settings)
• Exterior lights requests from SAM control unit (N10)

The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).

Evaluation of input factors 

The input factors are evaluated by the microprocessor and the corresponding components are actuated.

Controlling functions 

The headlamp control unit controls the following functions by actuating the corresponding components:

• Low beams power control
• Automatic headlamp range adjustment (HRA [LWR])
• Cornering lights (with CODE 621 (Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic)) or CODE 622 (Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic)))
• Dynamic curve illumination
• Active light distribution (with CODE 621 (Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic)) or CODE 622 (Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic)))
• Infrared light (with CODE 610 (Night View Assist))

Actuation of components 

The components are actuated via LIN.

The headlamp control unit then actuates the following components over the LIN:

• Left headlamp LIN:
  • Left headlamp range adjustment actuator motor
  • Left active curve illumination actuator motor
  • Left light distribution actuator motor
  • Left xenon light power supply module
  • Left front actuation module, LED exterior lighting:
    • Cornering lights (with CODE 621 (Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic)) or CODE 622 (Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic)))
    • Infrared light (with CODE 610 (Night View Assist))
• Right headlamp LIN:
  • Right headlamp range adjustment actuator motor
  • Right active curve illumination actuator motor
  • Right light distribution actuator motor
  • Right xenon light power supply module
  • Right front actuation module, LED exterior lighting:
    • Cornering lights (with CODE 621 (Intelligent Light System (left-hand traffic)) or CODE 622 (Intelligent Light System (right-hand traffic)))
    • Infrared light (with CODE 610 (Night View Assist))
