Function requirements, general 

• No overvoltage or undervoltage
• Terminal 15 ON

The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) transmits the status of circuit 15 via the interior CAN (CAN B) to the SAM control unit (N10).

Backup light actuation, general 

The backup light actuation enables the traffic lane to the rear of the vehicle to be illuminated when backing up.

Function sequence for backup light actuation 

Backup light actuation is activated when "gear range R" is engaged. Gear range "R" is engaged by the fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8n4). The fully integrated transmission control unit then sends the "Gear range R engaged" status over the drive train CAN (CAN C), CDI control unit (N3/9) (diesel engine) or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (gasoline engine) and chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1) to the electronic ignition lock control unit.

The electronic ignition lock control unit uses this to generate the "Reverse gear engaged" status and sends this over the interior CAN to the SAM control unit and to the trailer recognition control unit (N28/1) in vehicles with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch).

The SAM control unit then actuates the left backup lamp (E3/1e3) in the inner left rear lamp unit (E3/1) and the right backup lamp (E4/1e3) in the inner right rear lamp unit (E4/1).

The trailer recognition control unit actuates the backup lights on the trailer over the trailer socket (X58) (except CODE 460 (Canada version) and except CODE 494 (USA version)) or over the 7-pin trailer socket (X58/11) (with CODE 460 (Canada version) or CODE 494 (USA version)).
