DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by welding or soldering work on closed air conditioning system. Risk of poisoning  caused by inhaling overheated refrigerant vapors. Risk of injury  to skin and eyes caused by contact with liquid refrigerant. Do not perform welding work on or near a closed air conditioning system. No smoking or open flames. Wear safety glasses and protective gloves. Work only in well ventilated areas. Carry out repair work on the air conditioning system circuit only after the system has been drained. AS83.00-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing coolant. Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

1 Drain air conditioning system, then disconnect air conditioning service unit MODEL 176, 246

2 Remove coolant circulation pump (M13/5) from bracket (34) MODEL 117, 156, 176, 242 (except 242.89), 246
with CODE 581 (Comfort automatic air conditioning)
without CODE 228 (Auxiliary heater)

IMPORTANT The heater hoses at the coolant circulation pump (M13/5) remain connected.

3 Unscrew nut (32) and detach clamp (33) IMPORTANT Clamp (33) remains in vehicle.  
4 Remove push button (42) on firewall MODEL 242.890  
5 Remove screw/bolt (40) and remove bracket (41) MODEL 242.890  
6 Unscrew nut (5) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, low- and high-pressure lines to expansion valve *BA83.30-P-1002-01G 
7 Pull low-pressure line (4) out of expansion valve (1) and close off INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Close off opening of low-pressure line (4) and expansion valve (1) using suitable stop plugs. Replace sealing ring (11) of low-pressure line (4).  
8 Unscrew nut (6) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, low- and high-pressure lines to expansion valve *BA83.30-P-1002-01G 
9 Pull high pressure line (7) out of expansion valve (1) and close off INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Close off opening of high pressure line (7) and expansion valve (1) using suitable stop plugs. Replace sealing ring (11) of high-pressure line (7).  
10 Release pressure in cooling system IMPORTANT Carefully open cap at coolant expansion reservoir and then close again.  
11 Clamp off coolant hoses (14, 17) with pinch-off pliers (13)    
12 Release catch springs (15, 16) at coolant hoses (14, 17)    
13 Detach coolant hoses (14, 17) from connection fittings at air conditioner housing (A32)    
14 Close off connection fittings at air conditioner housing (A32) using suitable stop plugs NOTES
The connection fittings of the air conditioner housing (A32) must be closed off.
Otherwise coolant may escape and the vehicle interior may be soiled.
 
15 Remove cross member under instrument panel   AR68.10-P-1120NKB
16 Disconnect battery ground line   AR54.10-P-0003NKB
17 Unscrew nuts of positive line and ground line of PTC heater booster and remove positive line and ground line from PTC heater booster MODEL 117, 156, 176, 246 with ENGINE 607, 651

18 Disconnect electrical connector (22) from the blower regulator (A32n1)    
19 Detach drain hose (24) from air conditioner housing (A32)    
20 Detach cable bracket (25) from air conditioner housing (A32)    
21 Unhook ground line (23) from air conditioner housing (A32)    
22 Detach retaining clamps (20, 21) with cable duct (26) from air conditioner housing (A32)    
23 Have someone assist you when removing the air conditioner housing (A32) from the vehicle NOTES
Carefully take out air conditioner housing (A32).
Otherwise components in the vehicle interior may be damaged.
 
24 Install in the reverse order    
25 Fill coolant, bleed cooling system and check it for leaks MODEL 117, 156, 176, 242, 246
