Remove/install front axle shafts - AR33.30-P-0620NKB

MODEL 117, 156, 176, 242, 246 with TRANSMISSION 711.6, 724.0 

MODEL 242 with ENGINE 780

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1.1 Set gear selector switch to position N and release parking brake Model 117, 156, 176, 242, 246 with transmission 724.0
Model 242 with engine 780
 
1.2 Move gearshift lever to neutral position and release parking brake Model 117, 156, 176, 242, 246 with transmission 711.6  
2 Remove bottom engine compartment paneling Model 117, 176, 246 with engine 607 with transmission 711.6, 724.0

INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only mount bottom engine compartment paneling after the leak check.

3 Remove each wheel-and-tire assembly (1)    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050AK
4 Remove bolt of front axle shaft (4) from wheel hub INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Always replace bolt on front axle shaft (4).  
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle shaft to front axle shaft flange *BA33.30-P-1001-07D 
5 Press front axle shaft (4) out of wheel hub   AR33.30-P-0620-04GC
Spray Teflon article no. K0007.1 *BR00.45-Z-1041-06A

6 Remove bolt of front axle shaft (4) from wheel hub    
7 Detach lower control arm (2) and front axle shaft (4) from steering knuckle (3)   AR33.20-P-0440-01NKB
NOTES
Turn the steering and check that the puller is seated correctly on the steering knuckle (3) and on the thrust piece.
Otherwise the steering knuckle (3) or the axle boot on the supporting joint will be damaged.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Nut, supporting ball joint/transverse control arm to steering knuckle *BA33.15-P-1005-01F

8 Detach front axle shaft intermediate bearing (5) from bearing support at crankcase Model 117, 156, 176, 242, 246 with transmission 711.6, 724.0
When removing the right front axle shaft (4) with intermediate shaft (6).
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, bearing cap for right front axle shaft to cylinder crankcase *BA33.30-P-1002-07D 
9.1 Pull left front axle shaft (4) out of transmission and remove When removing left front axle shaft (4).
INSTALLATION NOTES
Do not damage radial shaft sealing ring of front axle shaft (4) when installing.
Otherwise the transmission may start to leak.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Always replace retaining ring of left front axle shaft (4).

9.2 Pull out right front axle shaft (4) and remove When removing right front axle shaft (4).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Always replace retaining ring of right front axle shaft (4).

9.3 Pull out right front axle shaft (4) together with intermediate shaft (6) and remove When removing the right front axle shaft (4) with intermediate shaft (6).
INSTALLATION NOTES
Do not damage radial shaft sealing ring of front axle shaft (4) when installing.
Otherwise the transmission may start to leak.

Radial shaft sealing ring must be replaced. Leaks can occur otherwise.
 
INSPECT Check     
12 Check boots of front axle shaft (4) and replace if necessary When reinstalling the front axle shaft (4).

13 Check radial shaft sealing ring of front axle shaft (4) and replace if necessary Model 117, 156, 176, 242, 246 with transmission 711.6, 724.0

14 Install in the reverse order    
15 Check transmission oil level and correct if necessary
