Location
One headlamp control unit each is mounted at the side on the left front lamp unit and at the side on the right front lamp unit.
The headlamp control units are tightly screwed to the housing of the respective front lamp units. The headlamp control units are connected to the vehicle-side wiring harness via the front lamp units.
Task
The headlamp control units operate in a master-slave combination and they communicate with each other over the chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2). As the master, the left headlamp control unit synchronizes the right headlamp control unit.
The headlamp control units have the following tasks:
- Reading in of sensors and signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Controlling functions
- Actuation of components
Reading in of sensors and signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
- Direct line
- Chassis CAN 2
Direct line
The left headlamp control unit reads in the signals of the following components over direct lines:
- Left rear level sensor (B22/7) (without CODE 488 (Steel/air suspension) and without CODE 489 (AIRMATIC (air suspension with continuous adjustment damping)))
- Left front level sensor (B22/8) (without CODE 488 (Steel/air suspension) and without CODE 489 (AIRMATIC (air suspension with continuous adjustment damping)))
- Left active curve lights position sensor (E1b1)
- Left light distribution position sensor (E1b2)
- Temperature sensors in left front lamp unit
The right headlamp control unit reads in the signals of the following components over direct lines:
- Right active curve lights position sensor (E2b1)
- Right light distribution position sensor (E2b2)
- Temperature sensors in right front lamp unit
Chassis CAN 2
The headlamp control units also read in the following function-relevant information over the chassis CAN 2:
- Variant coding
- Terminal status of terminal 15
- "Engine running" signal
- "Drivetrain operational" signal
- Light function request
- Vehicle level (with CODE 488 (Steel/air suspension) or CODE 489 (AIRMATIC (air suspension with continuously adjustable damping)) (only left headlamp control unit))
- Freeze frame data for Adaptive Highbeam Assist (with CODE 628 (AUTOMATIC HIGH BEAM CONTROL PLUS (IHC+)))

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.
Controlling functions
The headlamp control units actuate the following functions:
- Position lights
- Turn signal lamp
- High beams and headlamp flasher output
- Automatic headlamp range adjustment (HRA) (only left headlamp control unit)
- Cornering illumination
- Active curve illumination
- Active light distribution
- Thermal management (temperature monitoring)
The front lamp units have temperature sensors that are used to sense the heat development in the areas actuated by the LED. The headlamp control units evaluate the signals from five temperature sensors each. If the LED or the plastic housing of the front lamp units threatens to overheat as a consequence of high outside temperatures or high actuation currents, the headlamp control units reduce the LED actuation currents and thereby the level of heat development. The front lamp units are also ventilated. The active ventilation is also used at the same time for thawing or deicing at low outside temperatures.

The actuation of the components takes place via the following connections:
- Direct line
- Chassis CAN 2
Direct line
The left headlamp control unit actuates the following components over direct lines:
- Left front side marker lamp (E1e6) (with CODE 460 (Canada version) or CODE 494 (USA version))
- Left cornering light (E1e9)
- Left position light, daytime running light and turn signal light (E1e25) (not ECE vehicles)
- Left position light, daytime running light, turn signal light and ambient light (E1e26) (only Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) vehicles)
- Left headlamp range adjustment actuator motor (E1m1)
- Left active curve illumination actuator motor (E1m2)
- Left light distribution actuator motor (E1m3)
The right headlamp control unit actuates the following components over direct lines:
- Right front side marker lamp (E2e6) (with CODE 460 (Canada version) or CODE 494 (USA version))
- Right cornering light (E2e9)
- Right position light, daytime running light and turn signal light (E2e25) (not ECE vehicles)
- Right position light, daytime running light, turn signal light and ambient light (E2e26) (only ECE vehicles)
- Right headlamp range adjustment actuator motor (E2m1)
- Right active curve illumination actuator motor (E2m2)
- Right light distribution actuator motor (E2m3)
Chassis CAN 2
The left headlamp control unit sends requests for high beam light distribution over the chassis CAN 2 to the left front lamp unit LED matrix control unit (E1n11) and to the right front lamp unit LED matrix control unit (E2n11).
