Location
The reversing camera is located above the license plate number on the left in the handle strip for the trunk lid (in model 218.3) or the liftgate (in model 218.9).
Task
The backup camera does the following:
- Recording area to the rear of the vehicle
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Output of signals
Recording area to the rear of the vehicle
The reversing camera is an optical parking and maneuvering aid. Its tasks include a surrounding field recording of the area to the rear of the vehicle, generation of dynamic guide lines and sending the video image to the COMAND controller unit (A40/3). The pictures recorded by the reversing camera are processed accordingly and electronically corrected for distortion by the integrated control unit for showing on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8). The reversing camera is supplied with voltage by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2).
The reversing camera is automatically calibrated by the integrated control unit.
Reading in of signals
The reversing camera reads in the following information among other things via chassis CAN 2:
- Terminal status of terminal 15
- Drive position "R" engaged
- Displayed vehicle speed
- Steering wheel angle

Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor whereupon the relevant signals are then issued.
Output of signals
The signals are issued through the following connections:
- Direct line
- Chassis CAN 2
Direct line
The reversing camera sends the image data to the COMAND controller unit via a low voltage differential signaling (LVDS) line.
Chassis CAN 2
The reversing camera also sends the following signals over chassis CAN 2:
- Request for picture output in Audio/COMAND display

Body
The reversing camera is a color picture camera with a wide-angle lens (angle of vision∠ > 180°) and integrated control unit.
