Remove/install steering knuckle - AR33.25-P-0400EWX

MODEL 212, 218 with CODE M005 (4MATIC)

IMPORTANT Notes on repair work on suspension components   AH00.00-P-0100-01A
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Detach front wheel and tire assembly    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP40.10-P-4050EW
2 Remove screw/bolt (1) from front axle shaft (2) TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, front axle shaft to wheel hub *BA33.30-P-1001-02H 
3 Detach brake caliper (3) MODEL 212
with CODE M005 (4MATIC) With split brake caliper support

    MODEL 212 except AMG with CODE M005 (4MATIC) with fixed-caliper brake AR42.10-P-0225EWF

NOTES
Fasten the brake caliper (3) to the vehicle with hook.
The brake hose must not be kinked or subjected to tension, otherwise it will be damaged.
IMPORTANT Do not detach the brake hose.

4 Detach left front-axle rpm sensor (L6/1) or right front-axle rpm sensor (L6/2) from steering knuckle (4) and unclip electrical feed line from line bracket   AR42.30-P-0712EW
5 Remove supporting strut (11) MODEL 212.0
with CODE 460 (Canada version)
with CODE 494 (US version)
with CODE M005 (4MATIC)
Remove/install supporting strut
 
      AR33.25-P-0001EWX
6 Detach tie rod (5) from steering knuckle (4) MODEL 212, 218
with CODE M005 (4MATIC)
Pressing out and attaching track rod joint at steering knuckle
NOTES
Turn in steering onto lock and check for correct seating of SPECIAL TOOL puller on the tie rod (5). If seating is incorrect, damage to the steel contact ring of the tie rod (5) occurs and this results in destruction of the tie rod (5).

Installation:  Do not tighten the nut of the bracket (14) until the supporting strut (11) has been installed.

Remove the bracket (14).

    TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking nut, tie rod to steering knuckle *BA46.40-P-1001-01N

7 Remove cross strut (6) from steering knuckle (4)   AR33.15-P-0161EW 
8 Remove torque strut (7) from steering knuckle (4)   AR33.15-P-0160EWX 
9 Tilt the steering knuckle (4) to one side, in the process pull the front axle shaft (2) out of the front axle shaft flange NOTES
Tilt the steering knuckle (4) carefully.
The rubber boots of the front axle shaft (2) could otherwise be damaged.
 
10 Detach suspension strut (8) from steering knuckle (4) and remove steering knuckle (4) MODEL 212, 218

without CODE 489 (AIRMATIC (air suspension with continuous damper adjustment))

11 Remove brake disk (9) and brake cover plate (10) from steering knuckle (4) When replacing steering knuckle (4)  
    TORQUE SPECIFICATION *BA42.10-P-1003-06H

with CODE M005 (4MATIC)
 
INSPECT Check     
12 Check rubber boot and ball joint of tie rod (5) for wear and damage If worn or damaged.
↓
Replace tie rod (5).
 
    MODEL 212, 218 AR46.40-P-0200EW
13 Check rubber boot and ball joint of strut rod (7) for wear and damage If worn or damaged.
↓
Replace strut rod (7).
 
    MODEL 212, 218 AR33.15-P-0160EWX 
14 Check rubber boot and ball joint of cross strut (6) for signs of damage If damaged:
↓
Replace cross strut (6).
 
    MODEL 212, 218 AR33.15-P-0161EW 
15 Check front axle shaft (2) for damage If damaged:
↓
Replace front axle shaft (2).
 
    MODEL 212 AR33.30-P-0620CWX 
16 Install in the reverse order
