DANGER Risk of poisoning  from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury  from skin and eye contact with brake fluid Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid. AS42.50-Z-0001-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  . Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary. AS00.00-Z-0002-01A

REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
1 Remove engine compartment cover above brake booster Vehicles with CODE (B14) AMG Carbon engine compartment cover  
2 Unscrew cap of brake fluid reservoir and extract some brake fluid IMPORTANT In order to prevent the expansion reservoir overflowing when pressing back the brake pistons.  
3 Remove the front wheels model 197 AR40.10-P-1100RQ
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 212, 218 AP40.10-P-4050EW
INSPECT Check     
4 Check condition of brake disks (61)    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.10-P-4258QQ 
    IMPORTANT Replace brake disks (61) as a set only.  
5 Check brake lining thickness MODEL 197, 212, 218  
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 197.3/4, 212, 218
NOTES
Check whether the brake pads (43) are worn beyond the wear limit.
If this point is ignored, the web between the sealing groove and dust cap can be damaged.
IMPORTANT Replace brake pads (43) as a set only.

Check brake system for leaks using pressure tester:
AP42.10-P-4253A

6 Disconnect electrical connector of right front brake wear sensor (S10/2x1)    
NOTES Notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors   AH42.10-P-0003-01RQ
    IMPORTANT On the right brake caliper (31a).  
7 Detach electrical connector of right front brake wear sensor (S10/2x1) from brake caliper (31a) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace screw/bolt.
IMPORTANT On the right brake caliper (31a).
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION model 197 *BA42.10-P-1002-10T 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION MODEL 212, 218 *BA42.10-P-1002-10J 
8 Press back brake piston using resetting device IMPORTANTSPECIAL TOOL Attach pusher tool to the elevations (A) of the brake pads (43). Secure remaining brake pistons to prevent them slipping out.
If the brake pistons are sluggish replace brake caliper (31a).

9.1 Remove bolts (35) and remove brake caliper (31a) model 197
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace bolts (35).
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Bolt, fixed brake caliper to wheel carrier *BA42.10-P-1001-10T 
9.2 Unscrew bolts (36) and remove brake caliper (31a) with brake caliper support (31b) MODEL 212, 218
NOTES
The brake caliper (31a) and brake caliper support (31b) must always be removed together as a complete unit and should not be separated.
It will otherwise no longer be possible to guarantee optimum alignment of the brake caliper (31a) to the brake disk (61). This can then result in greater wear and an incorrect contact pattern.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace the bolts (36).
IMPORTANT The bolts (35) securing the brake caliper (31a) to the brake caliper support (31b) must not be loosened.
 
TORQUE SPECIFICATION Self-locking bolt, brake caliper support to steering knuckle *BA42.10-P-1008-10J 
10 Secure brake caliper (31a) to vehicle free of tension NOTES
Do not kink the brake hose or subject it to tensile loads.
Otherwise damage will occur.
IMPORTANT Do not damage paint of brake caliper (31a)
 
11 Remove brake pads (43) from brake caliper (31a) IMPORTANT Do no loosen or remove screw bolts (41) Press the brake pads (43) off the screw bolts (41) against the force of the retaining springs (31d).
IMPORTANT Brake pads (43) are to be disposed of as special waste. The local authorities can provide information regarding whether disposal is also permitted as industrial waste similar to domestic waste.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Do not apply brake pastes or lubricants to the brake pads (43) and brake calipers (31a).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Only complete sets of brake pads (43) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
 
INSPECT Check     
12 Check brake calipers (31a) for leaks and dust boots for damage IMPORTANT Install new brake calipers (31a) if necessary.  
13 Check retaining springs (31d) for deformation and correct seat IMPORTANT If necessary, replace retaining springs (31d).  
CLEANING Clean     
14 Clean contact surfaces of brake pads (43) on brake caliper (31a) NOTES
Do not use sharp-edged or pointed tools to clean.
Otherwise damage may occur.
 
Assembly cleaner *BR00.45-Z-1028-04A 
15 If necessary, clean the perforation in the brake disks (61) model 197

16 Pull right front brake wear sensor (S10/2) out of pad backing plate of brake pad (43) NOTES On the right brake caliper (31a).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace the defective right front brake wear sensor (S10/2).
 
17 Detach brake hose from brake caliper (31a) When replacing the brake caliper (31a).

NOTES
Seal connections immediately.
Otherwise damage can be caused by escaping brake fluid.

18 Remove locking bolt (64) and remove brake disk (61) When removing the brake disk (61).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Observe the marking on the installation side (M).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Replace locking bolt (64).

CLEANING Clean     
19 Clean contact surface and interference fit of brake disk (61)    
20 Lightly grease seat of brake disk (61) Paste, hot lubrication 1 kg, DBL 6879.20 *BR00.45-Z-1005-06A 
21 Install in the reverse order    
22 Bleed brake system After removing/installing the brake caliper (31a).

23 Check brake system for leaks After removing/installing the brake caliper (31a).

DANGER Risk of accident  when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system. AS42.50-Z-0002-01A
24 Operate the brake pedal several times until the brake pads (43) abut the brake disks (61) IMPORTANT Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.  
INSPECT Check     
25 Check fluid level in brake fluid reservoir; correct if necessary MODEL 197, 212, 218  
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 197.3/4 AP42.10-P-4210RQ
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 212, 218 AP42.10-P-4210EW 
DANGER Risk of death  caused by limbs being caught or crushed by rotating parts when performing tests on the brake test stand Never leave the vehicle unattended on the rollers except in an emergency. Ensure that no one is under the vehicle or near rotating parts during testing. In case of emergency, use the EMERGENCY OFF switch to shut down test stand. AS42.00-Z-0001-01A
26 Carry out brake test on the test stand    
REFER TO MAINTENANCE     AP42.00-P-4290BA 
27 Install engine compartment cover above brake booster MODEL 197, 212, 218 with CODE B14 (AMG Carbon engine compartment cover)
