Location
The reversing camera is above the license plate on the left in the handle strip of the trunk lid (model 205.0/1) or the liftgate (model 205.2, 253).
Task
The backup camera does the following:
- Recording area to the rear of the vehicle
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Output of signals
Recording area to the rear of the vehicle
The reversing camera is an optical parking aid. Its tasks include a surrounding field recording of the rear area, the generation of dynamic guide lines and the sending of the video picture to the head unit (A26/17). The pictures recorded by the reversing camera are processed accordingly and electronically corrected for distortion by the integrated control unit to be shown in the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8). The reversing camera is supplied with power by the rear SAM control unit (N10/8).
The reversing camera is automatically calibrated by the integrated control unit.
Reading in of signals
The reversing camera reads in, among others, the following information via user interface CAN (CAN HMI):
- Circuit 15 status
- Reverse gear status
- Service mode request
- Displayed vehicle speed
- Steering wheel angle
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions.
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor whereupon the relevant signals are then issued.
Output of signals
The signals are issued through the following connections:
- Direct line
- User interface CAN
Direct line
The reversing camera sends the picture data over a low voltage differential signal line (LVDS) to the head unit.
User interface CAN
The reversing camera sends, among others, the following signals via user interface CAN:
- Request for picture output in Audio/COMAND display
- Request to open/close rear camera cover

Body
The reversing camera is a color picture camera with a wide-angle lens (angle of vision ∠ > 130°) and integrated control unit.
