Location

The powertrain control unit is installed in the front passenger footwell.

Tasks

The powertrain control unit is responsible for the following tasks:

Apart from this, the powertrain control unit acts as an interface (Gateway) between the connected CAN bus systems.

Regulation of engine cooling

The fan motor (M4/7), the radiator shutters actuator motor (M87) or the radiator trim flap actuator motor (M2/37) (with CODE 5U3 (AIRPANEL)) and low-temperature circuit circulation pump 1 (M43/6) are controlled by the powertrain control unit via the drivetrain LIN (LIN C3).

Reading in of signals

Input factors are read in by means of the following connections:

Evaluation of input factors

The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the affected components are then actuated.

Output of signals and actuation of components

Initial parameter are output over the following connections:

IMPORTANT The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) is the central interface (Gateway) for exchanging the function-relevant data of the control units that are connected to the various CAN bus systems.

Input factors and output factors for the following components are read in or output over direct lines by the powertrain control unit:

Body

The powertrain control unit consists of a plastic housing with three plug connections and internal measuring and control electronics.

Ground connection

The ground connection is made via the right front footwell ground point (W15/7).

IMPORTANT Assembly operations

Ensure before disconnecting the plug on the powertrain control unit that the ignition is switched off and processor run-on has ended. This is to prevent damage to the powertrain control unit and the storing of errors from the control units in the CAN network.
