Location
The mono multifunction camera and the stereo multifunction camera is positioned under a panel at the top center of the windshield.
Task
Mono multifunction camera:
The mono multifunction camera records information on the surroundings in the area to the front of the vehicle, e.g. ambient brightness, objects or traffic signs. These are evaluated by the integrated control unit, and used for implementing various functions.
Stereo multifunction camera:
The stereo multifunction camera consists of two high-resolution mono cameras, that are mounted at a distance apart of approx. s_= 20_cm in a housing. While one mono camera only estimates the distances to objects, the stereo multifunction camera can measure the distance to an object and its height above the road. This is made possible by the differences in perspective between the left and the right optical path. The electronic evaluation circuit in the stereo multifunction camera uses the same effect that enables people to have stereoscopic vision, this refers to the parallax or displacement between two images. On an average distance of s = 20 to 30 m, the stereo multifunction camera can determine the distance to the object accurately to within s = 20 to 30 cm. This high resolution is also available under more difficult conditions such as when multiple objects are situated very close to each other, when objects are partially concealed or when there is a low contrast between the object and the background. The electronic analysis system of the stereo multifunction camera is also able to differentiate between shadow and road markings and real objects. As well as the spatial position of a detected object, the stereo multifunction camera also supplies additional critical information: A direction of motion along the horizontal, vertical and longitudinal axis can be determined for each pixel of a detected object. This then clearly shows whether an object is moving and if so, where to. In combination with object classification (e.g. pedestrian) based on common features, it is possible to achieve a high degree of decision-making reliability. For example, the exact impact location for a collision can be calculated which in turn enables the time remaining until the point of impact to be used to maximum effect for safety precautions. The stereo multifunction camera supports this process over the entire vehicle speed range.

Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in via the following connection:

Periphery CAN (mono multifunction camera)
The mono multifunction camera reads in the following signals via periphery CAN, for example:
- Circuit 15 status
- Engine running or drive train operational
- Wheel speed
- Vehicle speed
- Vehicle lateral and longitudinal acceleration
- Information indicative of driver activity, such as turn signaling, accelerating, braking, steering
- Information indicating possible distraction of the driver, such as operation of the audio system, different comfort functions (interior illumination, steering column adjustment) and different menu levels in the instrument cluster (A1)
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Chassis FlexRay (Stereo multifunction camera)
The stereo multifunction camera reads in the following signals via the chassis FlexRay, for instance:
- Circuit 15 status
- Engine running or drive train operational
- Wheel speed
- Vehicle speed
- Vehicle lateral and longitudinal acceleration
- Accelerator pedal position
- Information on brake control system activities
- Information indicative of driver activity, such as turn signaling, accelerating, braking, steering
- Information indicating possible distraction of the driver, such as operation of the audio system, different comfort functions (interior illumination, steering column adjustment) and different menu levels in the instrument cluster
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the microprocessor and the corresponding components are actuated.

The respective multifunction camera evaluates light sources in the front of the vehicle. In the stereo multifunction camera, evaluation takes place via the right camera head.
Actuation of components
To avoid any fogging in the multifunction camera's field of view the front window is heated in this area by the auxiliary heater heating element (R50). The auxiliary heater heating element is directly actuated by the multifunction camera.

The multifunction camera sends status information and requirements over the following connection:

The multifunction camera consists of the following main components:

After replacement of a multifunction camera or the windshield the corresponding multifunction camera has to be recalibrated.
