Location
The Electronic Stability Program control unit is located in the engine compartment, at the left next to the BAS brake booster (A7/7) at the traction system hydraulic unit.
Tasks
The Electronic Stability Program control unit contains the control for the following systems:
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)
- Electronic brake force distribution (EBD)
- Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
- Acceleration skid control (ASR), electronic traction system (ETS)
- Brake Assist System (BAS)
- Brake Assist System PLUS (BAS PLUS) (with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus))
- Hill Start Assist
- Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR) (for model 253 with CODE 430 (Off-road package))
- Adaptive brake lights, flashing (except with CODE 494 (USA version))
- Dry braking
- Precharging, depending on accelerator pedal actuation
- Precharging, depending on lateral acceleration
- HOLD function
- ESP® trailer stabilization (with CODE 550 (Trailer hitch))
- PRE-SAFE® system (with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus))
- Standstill control (SSC)
- Steer Assist
- Crosswind Assist
- Tire pressure loss warning (RDW)
- Permanent Speed Limiter (except CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus), except CODE 494 (USA version))
- Variable speed limiter (SPEEDTRONIC) (except CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus))
- Electric parking brake (EFB)
On vehicles with CODE 23P (Driving Assistance package Plus), the Variable Speed Limiter and the Permanent Speed Limiter are integrated in the radar sensors control unit (N62/1).
The Electronic Stability Program control unit has the following tasks:

- Actuation of components
Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in over the following connections:
- Direct line
- Chassis FlexRay (Flex E)
- Vehicle dynamics CAN (CAN H)
Direct line
The following signals are read in via direct lines:
- Circuit 30
- Terminal 31
- Brake lights switch (S9/1)
- Brake vacuum sensor (B64/1)
- Left front axle RPM sensor (L6/1)
- Right front axle RPM sensor (L6/2)
- Left rear axle RPM sensor (L6/3)
- Right rear axle RPM sensor (L6/4)
- Status of electric parking brake switch (S76/15)
Chassis FlexRay
The Electronic Stability Program control unit is a subscriber to chassis FlexRay. The following signals are read in over the chassis FlexRay:
- Signals from instrument cluster (A1) via user interface CAN (CAN HMI) and chassis FlexRay with electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) interface
- Signals from radar sensors control unit
- Status of terminal 15R ON, from electronic ignition lock control unit
- Status of trunk lid/liftgate lock (A85/5), from electronic ignition lock control unit, which receives the status from the rear SAM control unit (N10/8) via interior CAN (CAN B)
- Status of the left front door rotary tumbler switch (A85s1), from the electronic ignition lock control unit which receives the status from the left front door control unit (N69/1) via interior CAN
- Currently engaged gear range from fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8n4), status drive train operational, engine running and the accelerator pedal position from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (with gasoline engine) or from the CDI control unit (N3/9) (with diesel engine) via drive train CAN and powertrain control unit (N127)
- On-road/off-road menu (S70s1) (for model 253 with CODE 430 (Off-road package)) and Downhill Speed Regulation button (S70s2) (for model 253 with CODE 430 (Off-road package) read-in directly from Audio/COMAND control panel (A40/9) and sent over telematics CAN (CAN A), the head unit (A26/17), user interface CAN and the electronic ignition lock control unit
Vehicle dynamics CAN
Signals are read in over the chassis CAN from the following components:
- Status of driver belt buckle switch (S68/3) and the vehicle's sprung mass vibrations from the supplemental restraint system control unit (N2/10)
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the integrated microprocessor and the relevant components are then actuated.

- Left electric parking brake actuator motor (M76/1) and right electric parking brake actuator motor (M76/2)
Chassis FlexRay
- Instrument cluster (display of messages and warnings) via the electronic ignition lock control unit and user interface CAN
