Location
The multifunction camera is under a cover at the top center of the windshield.
Task
The multifunction camera records pictures of the area in front of the vehicle. The pictures are processed by the control unit and are used in the implementation of various functions.
The multifunction camera has the following tasks:
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Controlling functions
- Actuation of components
- Output of signals
Reading in of signals
The input factors are read in via the following connection:
- Chassis CAN (CAN E)
Chassis CAN
On vehicles with code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist or code (476) Lane Keeping Assist, the multifunction camera reads in the following signals via the chassis CAN:
- Terminal status of terminal 15
- Vehicle speed
- Information which indicates driver activities, e.g. turn signaling, acceleration, braking, steering.
- Information which indicates possible driver distraction, e.g. operation of the audio system, various comfort functions (interior illumination, steering column adjustment) and various menu levels in the instrument cluster (A1).
On vehicles with code (513) Speed Limit Assist, the multifunction camera reads in the following signals via the chassis CAN:
- "Engine running" or "drivetrain operational" signal
- Requests via menu settings in instrument cluster
- Vehicle speed
- Location information (navigation)
- Information on vehicle movement (yawing moment)
On vehicles with code (608) Adaptive Highbeam Assist, the multifunction camera reads in the following signals via the chassis CAN:
- "Engine running" or "drivetrain operational" signal
- Requests via menu settings in instrument cluster
- Vehicle speed
- Steering wheel angle and steering wheel velocity
- Information on vehicle movement (yawing moment)
The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see block diagram or function schematic).
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors are evaluated by the multifunction camera, and the corresponding components are actuated or the corresponding information or requests are output.
Controlling functions
The multifunction camera controls the following functions:
- Active Lane Keeping Assist
(with code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)
- Lane Keeping Assist
(with code (476) Lane Keeping Assist)
- Speed Limit Assist
(with code (513) Speed Limit Assist)
- Highbeam Assist
(with code (608) Adaptive Highbeam Assist)
Actuation of components
To avoid any fogging in the multifunction camera's field of view, the windshield is heated in this area by the auxiliary heater heating element (R50). The auxiliary heater heating element is actuated directly by the multifunction camera.
Output of signals
The signals are issued over the following connections:
- Chassis CAN
- Low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line
(for code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)
Chassis CAN
On vehicles with code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist or code (476) Lane Keeping Assist, the multifunction camera sends the following signals via the chassis CAN:
- Request to issue acoustic warnings
- Request to display system or warning messages
- Request to actuate steering wheel vibration motor (M99)
- Lane data (for code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)
On vehicles with code (513) Speed Limit Assist, the multifunction camera sends the following signal via the chassis CAN:
- Request to display speed limit
On vehicles with code (608) Adaptive Highbeam Assist, the multifunction camera sends the following signals via the chassis CAN:
- Light source identification status
- Request for automatic high beams
Low voltage differential signaling line (for code (238) Active Lane Keeping Assist)
The multifunction camera sends image data via the LVDS line to the video and radar sensor system control unit (N62/2).
Design
The multifunction camera consists of the following main components which are installed inside a housing:
- Multifunction camera
- Control unit
- Auxiliary heater heating element
The multifunction camera must be recalibrated after replacing the multifunction camera or windshield.
