	Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts		AH00.00-N-0001-01A
		While working on the rear axle care must be taken to ensure that the surfaces of aluminum components do not get any scratches, cracks and notches. Otherwise the service life of the of the parts will be reduced.
1	Secure vehicle on vehicle lift		AR00.60-P-0100T
2	Undo threaded connections securing propeller shaft intermediate bearing (2) to frame floor assembly		AR41.10-P-0050V
3	Remove rear stiffening bridge (8)		*BA61.10-P-1008-01A
4	Detach propeller shaft from differential (4)	The flex disk (3) remains on the propeller shaft.	AR41.10-P-0050V
5	Undo fitting sleeves of flexible coupling (3) on joint flange		AR41.10-P-0050-09V
	Drift for loosening fitting sleeves in flex disks.		WF58.50-P-4110-01A
6	Remove left rear axle shaft (5)		AR35.30-P-0620V
7	Detach heat sink from rear axle differential (4)	Model 172.475

8	Prop up rear axle differential (4) using transmission jack and assembly attachment and secure in place using suitable straps	Assembly attachment Transmission jack	Figure
9	Remove bolt (7) of front mounting of rear axle differential (4)	Tighten bolt (7), while doing so counterhold self-locking nut or plate with integrated locknut: ↓

10	Open trunk and remove covering for spare wheel well
11	Remove bolts (6) of the rear mounting of the rear axle center assembly (4)	On model 171.473, 172, only the right bolt (6) can be removed through the spare wheel well. The left bolt (6) is accessible from below.

12	Lower and remove rear axle center assembly (4)	In doing so pull rear axle center assembly (4) to left of the right-hand rear axle shaft (5). Ensure that no rear axle oil runs out when removing: ↓
		Pull out, press in rear axle shaft (5) at rear axle center assembly (4)	AR35.30-P-0620-02V
13.1	Install new breather of rear axle center assembly (4).	Model 171 Remove dirt from housing surface around the breather before removal using suitable cleaning agent and make sure that dirt does not penetrate into the breather housing opening. Damage can otherwise occur inside the rear axle differential (4). Rear axle differential (4) Ø 198 mm: Unscrew breather from rear axle differential (4).
		Rear axle differential (4) Ø 198 mm Rear axle differential (4) Ø 187 mm, 200 mm, 215 mm: Knock breather using suitable tool (e.g. drift, screwdriver) uniformly out of rear axle differential (4). Ensure breather is correctly seated in rear axle differential (4).	*BA35.31-P-1005-02C
13.2	Check rear axle differential (4) breather for signs of leakage, replace if necessary	Model 172 Remove dirt from breather before removal using suitable cleaning agent and make sure that dirt does not enter the breather. Damage can otherwise occur inside the rear axle differential (4).
14	Install in the reverse order
