Assessment of airbag and belt tensioner units in accident vehicles - AH91.00-P-0006-01B
MODEL 117, 129 as of 7/1/93, 156, 163, 164, 166, 168, 169, 170, 171, 172, 176, 197, 199, 202 as of 7/1/93, 203, 204, 205, 207, 208, 209, 210, 211, 212, 215, 216, 218, 219, 220, 221, 222, 230, 231, 240, 242, 245, 246, 251, 414, 415, 447, 461 as of 4/1/94, 463, 636, 638, 639
Following an accident:
- The airbag and emergency tensioning retractor system must be checked for external damage, defects and deployments.
- Defective or damaged components must be replaced immediately; repairing these components is not permissible.
The restraint system control unit must be replaced:
- If the housing is deformed or damaged.
- If the mounting bracket is deformed, even if the external appearance of the restraint system control unit appears to be in order.
- In case of electrical defect.
- After three airbag deployments.
A new restraint system control unit must be programmed and parameterized after installation.
Airbags oder emergency tensioning retractors must be replaced:
- After deployment.
- If there is external damage (even without deployment).
- If there is an electrical defect.
After deployment of the driver airbag, the steering wheel and steering column tubes with crash element must be replaced. If axial play or a noise is detected at the steering column tube, this must also be replaced, even if the airbag was not deployed.
For the following models, replacement of the steering column tube may potentially be avoided if the previously mentioned criteria are not fulfilled:
- MODEL 129
- MODEL 163
- Model 168
- Model 169 without code 441 (Electrically adjustable steering column)
- MODEL 170
- MODEL 202
- MODEL 203 without CODE 494 (USA version)
- MODEL 203 without CODE 275 (Electrically adjustable driver seat, steering column and outside mirrors with memory)
- MODEL 208
- MODEL 209 without CODE 494 (USA version)
- MODEL 209 without CODE 275 (Electrically adjustable driver seat, steering column and outside mirrors with memory)
- Model 210 without code 275 (Memory package)
- Model 245 without code 441 (Electrically adjustable steering column)
Proper function of the steering column tube is only guaranteed when the crash element is not damaged in any way.
After the front passenger airbag has deployed, the instrument panel must be replaced.
After the kneebag has deployed, the lower cover of the instrument panel must be replaced (if the kneebag is installed behind the lower cover of the instrument panel).
The sidebag cover in the door lining and the side paneling must be replaced after the sidebag has been deployed.
Otherwise, the airbag cannot be guaranteed to function correctly.
