Function sequence for symbol illumination
The following information is read in and evaluated by the instrument cluster for controlling the symbol and function illumination:
- Status of standing light actuation sent by front SAM control unit over the interior CAN
- Status of brightness control for instrument illumination (adjustment of symbol illumination from 0 to 100 %)
The instrument cluster uses the incoming data to generate the circuit 58d signal and transmits it via the interior CAN to the following control units to actuate the symbol illumination:

- Left front door central locking interior switch
The right front door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the following components.
Actuation over right door LIN:
- Right front seat setting switch group (with code (242) Electrically adjustable front passenger seat with memory)
Direct actuation:
- Passenger-side power window switch
- Right front door central locking interior switch
Models 204.0/2/9:
The left rear door control unit actuates the symbol illumination for the left rear power window switch.
Models 204.0/2/9:
The right rear door control unit actuates the symbol illumination of the right rear power window switch.
The symbol illumination for the controls located on the overhead control panel control unit (with code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding roof) is switched on when a vehicle door is opened without reception of the circuit 58d signal at a brightness value equivalent to 100%. If the status of the vehicle doors does not changes, the symbol illumination is switched off after t = 30 s. The opening or closing of a vehicle door while this time interval is running down causes it to start again. The symbol illumination is switched off immediately when the vehicle is locked. The symbol illumination is actuated to match the status of the light sensor (without code (345) Rain sensor) or the status of the rain/light sensor (with code (345) Rain sensor) with circuit 15R ON. For circuit 15 OFF the symbol illumination is actuated corresponding to the daytime (brightness) level.
Function sequence for ambiance illumination
The ambiance illumination encompasses the actuation of different components for indirect illumination of the footwell, instrument panel and vehicle doors.
The brightness can be adjusted using the instrument illumination brightness control.
The following signals are read in and evaluated by the front SAM control unit over the interior CAN for controlling the ambiance illumination:
- Circuit 15 status or status of central locking system (CL [ZV]) by the electronic ignition lock control unit
- Left front door status by the left front door control unit
- Right front door status by the right front door control unit
- Left rear door status from left rear door control unit (Model 204.0/2/9)
- Right rear door status from right rear door control unit (model 204.0/2/9)
- Standing lights actuation status
- Instrument cluster ambiance illumination brightness
The front SAM control unit then transmits the request to switch on the ambiance illumination to the following control units via the interior CAN:
